Our favourite Purple mattress alternatives
These are some of our favourite Purple mattress alternatives that are available in the UK.
Who is Purple?
The Purple mattress brand is a US company with over 30 years of experience. ⏲️
They are most well known for their Purple Grid mattress, an advanced bed-in-a-box mattress that features a Purple Grid layer.
We'll go into more detail on the Purple Grid further down.
Is Purple available in the UK?
Unfortunately, like other US brands such as Helix, Leesa, and Casper, Purple mattresses are not available in the UK. 👿
Purple is planning to ship to the UK at some point - however, there has been no announcement about when this will be.
But don’t worry! 😅
Instead, you can check out our best mattress article for our verdict on the top UK brands.
Purple mattress composition
Purple mattresses have a dynamic structure to provide the best support and comfort for your sleep.
These layers include:
- GelFlex Purple Grid
- Comfort Core polyfoam layer
- SoftFlex breathable cover
More premium Purple mattresses have additional comfort layers, including pocket springs.
Yet, one thing they all have in common is that they include the popular Purple Grid.
What is the Purple Grid?
The Purple Grid is a unique mattress material made from hyper-elastic polymer and shaped like a grid. 🟪
It responds to body weight and softens when pressure is applied.
See how it works below:
The flexible grid structure makes this a highly versatile mattress material that relieves pressure on the body and adapts to your shape.
The large gaps between the grid also encourage optimal ventilation.
The “Purple Squishy” is available for those who want to feel the Purple Grid before buying. 🤩
These can be purchased from the Purple store in a 1, 2, 5, or 30 pack.
It can be used as a stress reliever or even as a bed for your phone (what will they come up with next?!). 🤯
But it’s a great way to test out the Purple material before you risk the expense of a new mattress.
Purple mattress collection
The Purple brand started with one mattress, but now you have a variety of Purple mattresses available to choose from. 💜
The collection includes:
- Essential Collection (Purple NewDay, Purple, Purple Plus)
- Premium Collection (Purple Restore, Purple RestorePlus, Purple RestorePremier)
- Luxe Collection (Purple Rejuvenate, Purple Rejuvenate Plus, Purple Rejuvenate Premier)
There is also a selection of kid's mattresses so the whole family can join the Purple club. 👪
The Essential collection are entry-level mattresses with the Purple Plus being the most high-end out of the three options.
All these mattresses include the GelFlex Grid and memory foam layers.
The Purple Premium collection has additional zoned coil layers for even more support.
The Luxe is the most advanced collection in the Purple range, with deep layers of GelFlex, comfort foam, edge support foam and a zoned coil system.
Are Purple mattresses comfortable?
Is this advanced technological mattress comfortable? 🤔
We’ll break down everything you need to know to determine if a Purple mattress is the best option for a better night’s sleep.
Sleeping position
Purple mattresses are best for average-weight back sleepers.
These medium-firm mattresses provide support and comfort for a balanced sleep. ⚖️
If you experience back pain during sleep, this is an indication you have the wrong type of mattress for your sleeping position.
The Hypnia Essential Hybrid provides a good balance of comfort and support, ideal for back sleepers:
Our firmness scale can advise you on the type of mattress you need.
Like foam mattresses, the Purple Grid top layer allows the hips to sink into the mattress to relieve pressure points whilst keeping the spine aligned. 🤗
The Purple mattress is also suitable for most side sleepers as the Purple Grid absorbs the weight of the hips and shoulders.
The Simba Hybrid mattress, made of contouring Simbatex foam and supportive mini springs, is our favourite option for side sleepers:
However, lighter-weight side sleepers might prefer a slightly softer mattress.
We also wouldn’t recommend a Purple mattress for stomach sleepers. 👎
Stomach sleepers require a firmer mattress that keeps the spine and neck neutrally aligned.
Instead, a firmer mattress, such as the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid, would be more suitable.
Breathability
One of the coolest aspects of the Purple Grid mattress is that it’s highly breathable. ❄️
The grid construction of the polymer material means that it has air channels throughout, encouraging airflow, similar to an innerspring mattress.
This temperature-neutral mattress encourages hot air to flow through the mattress and back out again, preventing heat build-up. 🌬️
You should use your Purple mattress on a slatted frame for best results.
The gaps between the slats will ensure warm air can escape out the bottom of the mattress.
The Nectar Headboard bed frame is an excellent slatted bed frame option:
Motion transfer
Motion transfer refers to how much motion is transferred through a mattress. ⛵
In other words, can you feel your partner moving around next to you whilst you sleep?
A low-motion transfer mattress will keep you still for a quiet night’s sleep.
The Purple mattress absorbs motion relatively well compared with traditional coil-sprung mattresses.
However, some other brands have even better motion isolation.
A low-motion transfer mattress should be a priority if your partner moves around a lot during the night or if you’re a restless sleeper. ✅
The Panda Hybrid Bamboo mattress is an excellent low-motion transfer alternative.
Edge support
Purple beds haven’t got the best edge support. ☹️
This is an essential feature for those regularly sitting at the end of their bed.
A mattress with the best support will keep you stable right up to the edge of the bed.
