Nectar mattress protector composition
The Nectar mattress protector is a thin, waterproof layer made from 100% Tencel that will protect your mattress against stains, spills, moisture, dirt, and bacteria.
It also creates an additional layer to protect you from dust mites. 🐛
Even though the top of the cover is made of 100% Tencel, it features two additional materials:
- A polyurethane film at the bottom, which makes the mattress protector completely waterproof.
- A 100% polyester skirt that allows you to wrap the protector over any mattress that's up to 32 cm (12.6 inches) deep.
We'll consider these two further down.
But, first, what is Tencel?
Tencel fibres
Tencel [1] is a fibre made from the wood pulp of trees.
Not only is this an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative, but Tencel Lyocell fibres are also more breathable than cotton, moisture-wicking, and soft & luxurious to the touch. 🌱
This gives the Nectar mattress protector a unique feel to help you get a good night's sleep.
What does sleeping on the Nectar mattress protector feel like?
Of course, you’re not meant to sleep directly on the Nectar mattress protector, and it certainly shouldn’t change the way your mattress feels.
In fact, if you have a good mattress protector, you shouldn’t even notice that it’s there!
You’ll occasionally find quilted mattress protectors, which will add a top layer of cushioning to your mattress.
These will affect the way your bed feels - but only slightly.
Nectar in the USA actually sells a hypoallergenic quilted cotton mattress protector that’s resistant to allergens and acts as a waterproof barrier for dirt and dust. 🇺🇸
This quilted Nectar mattress protector is not available in the UK.
But our Nectar mattress protector has all the same quality features, and it acts as an almost invisible barrier to safeguard your mattress. 🛡
Silky-smooth feel
The Nectar mattress protector is soft and silky to the touch.
Even though you’ll be putting a sheet over the mattress protector, you don’t want the protector to be plasticky and uncomfortable.
This is especially true if you have a waterproof mattress protector.
The waterproof film of mattress protectors will always be plasticky - this is what makes them waterproof. 💦
But that should be the “behind the scenes” side of it.
The top of a good mattress protector should always be soft and comfortable to not interfere with your sleep.

Crinkle-free and noiseless
Some cheaper mattress protectors feel and sound like plastic.
You’ll hear them crinkle every time you move around on your bed.
This can be very annoying if you’re trying to get some good shuteye. 👁
Luckily, the Nectar mattress protector doesn’t do this.
When we first unpacked the Nectar mattress protector, it was quite wrinkled and didn’t stretch over the mattress very well, only covering it quite loosely.
But there is a big note when you first unpack the protector, telling you to wash it first to ensure a good fit!
After popping it into the machine and waiting for it to dry (more on this further down), the mattress protector fit over our bed perfectly - and crinkle-free! 🥳
The snug fit ensures that the protector won’t slide to and fro as you sleep.
Cooling protection
Some mattress protectors act as a barrier not only to dirt and moisture but also to airflow - which isn’t desirable.
If your mattress protector isn’t breathable, it’ll trap body heat and slowly warm up your bed.
If you’re a hot sleeper or heavy sweater, this can be uncomfortable. 🥵
Luckily, Tencel Lyocell cellulosic fibres are breathable and absorb moisture efficiently.
The enhanced breathability ensures that your Nectar mattress protector will keep you cool and comfortable all night long. ❄️
Full waterproof protection
Having a mattress protector that looks and feels nice is one thing, but it also has a job to do.
The purpose of a mattress protector is to safeguard your mattress against dirt, spills, stains, and bacteria.
While any cover will protect you against dirt and stains, only a waterproof layer will protect your mattress against spills and moisture.
This is important if you enjoy your morning coffee in bed - or if you’re equipping a bed for a little one prone to night-time accidents! ☕️
Most cot mattresses actually come with a waterproof protector.
And all the best mattress protectors are 100% waterproof - including the Nectar protector!
To test this, we poured a glass of water onto the mattress protector. 🚰

Thankfully, the Nectar protector did its job perfectly, and the water simply rolled off it.
No moisture seeped down into the mattress at all.
That’s a good thing - we would have ruined our mattress otherwise! 😅
Nectar mattress protector washing instructions
A good mattress protector will always be machine-washable. 🛀
Conveniently, the Nectar waterproof mattress protector is washable up to 90℃.
Products washable at high temperatures are a great anti-allergy choice for people prone to allergies and asthma. 🤧
A machine wash at high temperatures guarantees that any bed bugs or dust mites that may have found their way into your bed will be killed.
No tumble drying
On the downside, the Nectar mattress protector cannot be tumble-dried.
You'll need to hang it out to drip dry. ☀️
But, very few waterproof mattress protectors can actually be tumble-dried.
This is because the waterproof membrane can easily be damaged if it comes into contact with the hot drum.
The Simba mattress protector is a rare exception, which can be tumble dried at low temperatures.
Some guides suggest that you can actually tumble dry all waterproof protectors on a low-heat setting, but we wouldn't risk it.
That said, not being able to dry a mattress protector can be an inconvenience as the waterproof film takes a very long time to dry - even in summer conditions.
We usually expect a protector to dry within 24 hours, but it can take even longer. ⏰
Buying two protectors and swapping them out while waiting for the other to dry is a good solution.
How often should you wash your mattress protector?
Luckily, you don't have to wash your mattress protector every week.
Washing it once every two months or so is plenty.
But you should pop it into the wash immediately after you've spilt something. 🍷
You can just throw the protector into the wash with your regular bedding.

The Nectar mattress protector has been designed to fit snugly over your mattress.
It's available in all standard UK mattress sizes. 🇬🇧

The protector is quite stretchy to ensure a good fit.

You can even fit it over a mattress and a mattress topper.
