Emma mattress topper composition
The Emma Sleep topper has a unique design.
As its name - Emma Flip Topper - suggests, you can flip the topper and sleep on either side.
The foam layers on each side differ:
- Comfort side: Airgocell foam
- Support side: ZeroGravity foam
This dual-sided design is unique, allowing you to sleep on the side you find most comfortable. 👌
There's also a polyester case that covers both sides, which we'll look at further down.
Let's look at these two foam layers more closely.
Emma mattress topper foam layers
There are two sides to the Emma Flip topper, made from different materials.
Emma comfort layer: Airgocell foam
The softer side of the Emma Flip topper is made from breathable Airgocell foam.
This is the same visco-elastic memory foam material in the award-winning Emma Original mattress.
Memory foam is characterised by its body-hugging comfort and pressure relief abilities. 🤗
The material adapts to your body optimally, relieving pressure points and helping your muscles relax.
This layer provides added comfort and that "sleeping on a cloud" feeling. ⛅️
Airgocell foam is also extra-breathable, allowing for increased airflow and preventing overheating.
Emma support layer: ZeroGravity foam
The firmer side of the Emma mattress topper is made from super supportive HRX ZeroGravity foam.
This cold foam layer offers stability and pressure distribution.
While cold foam is still comfortable and shares many features of memory foam, it won't give you that sinking-into-the-foam feeling, so you'll feel a tad more supported overall.
Emma mattress topper firmness
It's not always easy to give mattress toppers an exact degree of firmness. 🧸☁️🧱
This is because it depends largely on the mattress it's placed on.
So, a mattress topper will feel more or less soft, depending on the firmness of the underlying mattress.
But, we can give estimates judging from our Emma mattress topper review experience. 🧐
Overall, we can say that the Emma Flip topper made our mattress feel softer. ☁️
Even though one side of the topper is softer and the other firmer, we'd still rate this as an overall medium-firm mattress topper.
Using the Sleep Hero firmness scale, we'd judge it as the following:
- The soft side is rated at 5 out of 10.
- The firmer side is rated at 6 out of 10.
On our firmness scale, 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
Does the Emma mattress topper make your mattress more comfortable?
We were lucky enough to try this product for several weeks for our Emma mattress topper review.
Overall, we felt the Emma topper added an extra comfy layer to the mattress.
We found the topper exceptionally comfortable when used with a very firm mattress, like a spring mattress. 🌀
This allows you to enjoy some squishy comfort on the sleep surface while still benefitting from the support and stability of the underlying springs.
Is the Emma topper supportive?
You'll benefit from increased support if you sleep on the firmer HRX side.
This is an excellent option if you're not comfortable on the top layer of your actual mattress.
For example, if your mattress has a top memory foam layer and you don't like that squishy feel, you could sleep on the HRX side of the Emma topper.
This will change the way your mattress feels, and you'll benefit from a slightly firmer, more supportive feel.
If you're looking for an even firmer option, you could try the Simba Hybrid mattress topper, which combines foams and pocket springs for enhanced support. 🦁
Is the Emma topper comfortable?
If you're looking for added comfort, you can sleep on the softer Airgocell foam side.
This memory foam side is great if you're looking for orthopaedic relief.
Memory foam moulds to the shape of your body and relieves pressure points, which helps eliminate neck and lower back pains.
This side of the topper is also great if you're a side sleeper.
Since this Airgocell side is softer, you'll benefit from more sinkage in the heavier parts of your body, like the shoulders and hips.
This creates optimal spinal alignment, allowing you to sleep well and wake up pain- and tension-free.
Alternatively, the Emma Premium topper is an excellent choice for side sleepers as it includes even more (9 cm / 3.5 inches) of pressure-relieving foam.
Which side of the Emma topper should you sleep on?
As we've seen in the comfort section above, the side you sleep on will affect the feel of your mattress.
This is very much a matter of personal preference. 🥰
Ask yourself the following questions:
- How tall are you?
- How heavy are you?
- Do you like soft mattresses?
- Do you prefer firm mattresses?
The answers to these will help guide you.
In general, though:
- The softer side of the Emma topper will be most comfortable for lighter- and medium-weight people, those of a smaller build, side sleepers, and people looking for orthopaedic support.
- The firmer side of the Emma topper will be most comfortable for heavier-weight people, those of a larger build, or those looking for a little bit more support.
The good thing, though, is that you can simply try it out. 🥳
Spend a few nights sleeping on one side, then flip it over and see how that option feels.
We preferred the softer side, but it really is just a matter of personal preference. 🤷♂️
If you're not comfortable with the Emma Flip topper at all, you can send it back for a full refund within the 100-night trial period.
Do you need a mattress topper?
If you have a good-quality mattress that feels a little too firm, or you think that you could do with a tad more comfort, then a mattress topper is a good idea. 👌
They add that extra touch of luxury to your bed.
But, even the best mattress topper can't save you from the pain of a worn, old mattress.
This is because toppers adjust to your mattress. 😳
If your mattress is full of bumps and dips, the topper won't make it more comfortable.
You'll be better off investing in a new mattress.
You could try one of the luxurious Emma mattresses, like the Emma Original, Emma Hybrid, or the Emma Premium.
We've also recommended some of our all-time favourite mattresses below. 👇
Our favourite UK mattresses:
Emma mattress topper cover
The Emma mattress topper UK comes with an UltraDry cover that absorbs excess heat and moisture for enhanced temperature regulation. ❄️
The cover works together with the Airgocell layer to enhance overall breathability and keep you cool and comfortable.
This breathable cover is made of 98% polyester and 2% elastane.
Can you machine-wash the Emma topper cover?
Conveniently, you can easily remove and machine-wash the cover.
This is great for hygiene purposes, making it a hypoallergenic choice for people prone to allergies. 🤧
How do you attach the Emma topper to your mattress?
Unfortunately, the mattress cover doesn’t feature rubber bands or straps to attach it to the mattress.
It also doesn't have an anti-slip surface. 🥺
This is common with mattress toppers, but the topper could slip a little while you sleep, particularly if you're a restless sleeper.
We found this a little annoying during our Emma topper review.
Mattress toppers with straps are much more convenient.
The Simba Hybrid mattress topper and the Panda mattress topper are two excellent choices. 👌
The best alternative is to invest in good-quality bedding and use a sheet to keep the topper firmly in place.

Emma mattress topper sizes
The Emma Sleep topper is only available in a few select sizes in the UK. 🇬🇧
These are:
- Emma mattress topper double size: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
- Emma mattress topper king size: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
- Emma mattress topper super king size: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)
This isn't a train smash, as you'll still be able to find the topper in most adult bed sizes.
But, if you're looking for a topper in a range of both UK and EU sizes, we'd recommend the Panda memory foam mattress topper. 🇪🇺
Which size topper do you need?
As mattress toppers sit directly on top of your bed, they need to match the size of your mattress.
So, if you have a king mattress, you also need to buy an Emma king size mattress topper. 👑
This ensures the entire surface of your mattress is covered.
Emma mattress topper thickness
The thickness of a mattress topper affects how much of an effect it'll have on your sleeping comfort.
The Emma flip topper is 5 cm (1.9 inches) thick.
This is a great thickness for toppers, ensuring that it can adequately influence the feel of your mattress. 😴
Emma mattress topper prices
The Emma mattress topper isn't exactly cheap. 💷
It's quite a bit more expensive than other memory foam toppers, like the Panda mattress topper or the Eve mattress topper.
But, it also has a unique design - and, luckily, there are frequent discounts, which we'll look at in the next section. 👇
(Note: prices listed below are standard prices excluding any current coupons & discounts)
Emma mattress topper discount codes

Emma mattress topper delivery conditions
The Emma Flip mattress topper is delivered to your home within 3 - 7 working days. 🚚
Delivery within the UK is free of charge.
Like the Emma mattresses, the topper arrives rolled up and vacuum-sealed in a compact box. 📦
This makes transport easier.
How do you unpack your Emma mattress topper UK?
Unpacking your Emma mattress topper is very easy. 😅
Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Lift the box onto your mattress and take out the rolled-up topper.
- Remove the plastic wrapping.
- Unroll your topper.
- Voila.
The Emma mattress topper will begin expanding as soon as you've broken the vacuum seal.
Expansion usually happens quite quickly, but it can take a few hours to reach its full size. ⏰
Does the Emma mattress topper smell?
You may notice a faint chemical smell when you first unpack your Emma Flip Topper. 🧪
This is known as off-gassing, a common side effect of vacuum-packed sleep products.
Off-gassing isn't toxic or harmful.
The smell should disappear within a few hours. 🕰
We only experienced faint off-gassing when we did our Emma Flip topper review.
If you find off-gassing uncomfortable, we'd recommend keeping a window open while unpacking to help dissipate any smell. 🏡
Does the Emma mattress topper come with a trial?
Conveniently, the Emma mattress topper comes with a 100-night risk-free trial period. 🌗
This is fantastic news!
Why do we love trial periods?
Well, trial periods give you the chance to test the product in your own home to see if you really like it.
And if you don't?
Simple: Send the topper back and get a full refund. 💰
It may take a few nights to get used to a new mattress topper.
We'd recommend that you try it out for at least three weeks before making up your mind. 🗓
Should you buy the Emma mattress topper?
The Emma Flip topper is a fantastic product; we thought it was comfortable. 😴
At full price, it is pretty expensive - but, luckily, the frequent discounts make this a great value-for-money option.
We'd recommend the Emma mattress topper to:
- People looking to enhance their sleeping comfort.
- People who want the convenience of a dual-sided design.
We wouldn't recommend the topper to those looking for a budget product or very restless sleepers.
