Simba mattress topper composition
The Simba Hybrid topper aims to replicate the feel of the Simba mattress in a smaller package.
There are four layers to the Simba Hybrid topper.
These layers are:
- Super soft, breathable top cover
- Cooling open-cell Simba-Pure synthetic latex foam layer
- 2,500 Aerocoil 20 mm pocket springs enclosed in 100% polyester pockets
- High-resilience & high-density zoned Simba-Pure support base foam
The hybrid composition of the Simba mattress topper is unique.
Most mattress toppers are pure foam toppers, but the Simba topper combines both foams and conical pocket springs. 🌀
These add bounce and help cool the mattress topper.
What does sleeping on the Simba mattress topper feel like?
Mattress toppers are designed as comfort layers to change how your mattress feels.
In general, they are meant to add a layer of softness and comfort to firmer mattresses. 🧸🧱
How firm is the Simba Hybrid topper?
It isn't easy to give a set degree of firmness to mattress toppers in the way you would give a mattress a firmness level.
This is because the firmness of the topper is directly influenced by the firmness of the mattress underneath.
However, most toppers, including the Simba topper, are generally designed to be medium firm. 👍
They are usually meant to make your sleeping surface a little softer and give your mattress an instant boost in comfort.
That said, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the Simba topper made the mattress feel more firm. 😲
It definitely felt that way for our Simba Hybrid topper review.
We can't directly state that it made it firmer because toppers cannot change the mattress underneath, but the topper certainly gave our softer memory foam mattress a bit more stability.
Changing the sleeping surface
Why would this be the case?
Well, even though overall firmness wouldn't be influenced, the way your sleeping surface feels can be influenced.
Memory foam is characteristically softer and allows your body to sink in a little more deeply.
This will make moving around on memory foam toppers a little more challenging. 😕
The Simba topper has a hybrid composition of latex foam and pocket springs.
These are characteristically slightly firmer and easier to move around on.
Springs also tend to provide more support than all-foam products do.
It's these characteristics that you'll feel when sleeping on the Simba mattress topper. 🥳
We wouldn't recommend relying on a mattress topper to make a mattress firmer, but it does help if you're not a big fan of the memory foam sensation.
The Simba Hybrid mattress topper really feels very different to a standard memory foam mattress topper.
Of course, if your mattress isn't memory foam, you'll still reap the benefits - the Simba topper will still be soft enough to make a firmer mattress feel a little more comfortable.
How comfortable is the Simba topper?
The Simba topper is unique in that it combines Simbatex synthetic latex and pocket springs.
This has two effects:
- The foam provides body-contouring support and pressure relief that's comfortable without being too constrictive, as memory foam often is.
- The springs provide better support and a gentle bounce-back so that you can move easily on the topper, and they adapt well to your body for tension relief.
The Simba topper is particularly well-suited to side sleepers using a slightly firmer mattress. 👌
This is because the topper allows for more sinkage, which can help correct spinal alignment.
How does this work?
To sleep correctly in the side position, the hips and shoulders have to sink in a little more deeply while the head and feet remain lifted. ✅
This ensures optimal spinal alignment.
Like this:
If your mattress is too firm, pressure points will build up in the hip and shoulder areas, causing back pains and aches.
Adding a topper to the mix will allow for a little extra sinkage, ensuring spinal alignment and keeping you pain- and ache-free.
What about the bounce?
The Simba Hybrid topper will give you a good amount of bounce.
We like thinking of it in this way:
- Memory foam is like a dead spot. You'll lie flat and still, and you won't feel any motion carried through.
- The Simba topper is more "alive". You'll still lie flat and comfortably, but there is a little more movement across the surface as a whole.
If you're a restless sleeper, then you'll want to be opting for a surface feel like the Simba topper. 💃
It makes moving around on the mattress much more comfortable, and you won't ever feel "stuck" in the foams.
But, despite the additional bounce, you shouldn't experience enhanced motion transfer.
The Simba topper definitely allows for more movement than a pure memory foam topper, but not enough to limit motion isolation.
During our Simba Hybrid topper review, we experienced more bounce and movement than with the Panda memory foam topper, for example, but never felt excessive motion transfer.
You'll still be able to share the topper comfortably with a partner. 👩❤️👨
Does the Simba topper sleep hot?
Many of the best mattress toppers are made of memory foam.
Memory foam has superior body-contouring abilities, turning every average mattress into an orthopaedic support base.
But, the downside is that memory foam retains heat. 🥵
This means that memory foam toppers often result in hot & clammy sleeping environments.
Of course, this is great if you easily feel cold at night or if it's in the middle of winter.
But if you're a heavier sweater or easily feel hot, then this hot sensation will be quite uncomfortable. 😩
The Simba topper has been designed as a cooling mattress topper to suit those who easily feel hot. ❄️
It features numerous temperature regulation properties:
- The topper cover is breathable, allowing for a steady flow of air.
- The side of the cover has a 3D mesh for extra airflow.
- Latex has larger pores for enhanced breathability.
- The spaces between the springs allow for natural ventilation channels, further enhancing airflow.
These three features enhance airflow throughout the topper, wicking away heat and moisture and keeping you cooler and more comfortable all night long.
To test this, we contrasted the Simba topper to the Panda memory foam topper.
Even though the Panda topper has cooling features, it still felt significantly warmer than the Simba topper.
If you're a heavier sweater or if you sleep hot, then going for a hybrid topper like the Simba is an excellent idea. 👌
That said:
You may find that you sleep hotter on mattress toppers than you would on just a mattress.
It's always a good idea to try out a topper. 👍
We'd recommend opting for toppers with risk-free trial periods.
Simba mattress topper cover
There are two parts to the Simba mattress topper cover.
- The top part is 100% polyester, a soft and breathable surface to enhance the topper's cooling features.
- The bottom half is an anti-slip base layer with an almost plasticky feel. This helps keep your topper firmly on the mattress.
The two halves of the topper are easy to recognise:
The cover as a whole is hypoallergenic [1], which makes it an excellent choice for people prone to allergies. 🤧
Conveniently, the top part of the cover is also removable and machine-washable at 40℃.
It's pretty easy to take off, but putting it back on again is a bit of a challenge.
During our Simba topper review, we struggled to align the grey mesh side with the sides of the topper - the mesh always seemed to sit slightly further up or down. 😡
This isn't a train smash, but it may be easier to put the cover back on again with two people.
The Simba topper also has elasticated corner straps, which fit snugly around your mattress.
This means that your mattress topper stays firmly on top of your mattress.
Mattress toppers without straps, like many of the IKEA mattress toppers, tend to move around as you sleep.
This can be really uncomfortable. 😩
We did find, though, that the straps are quite tight.
This is great as it ensures your topper sits perfectly - but it could be challenging if you have a very deep mattress. 📏
If you look at the pictures below, you can see that the strap stretches quite tightly around an 18 cm (7 inches) mattress.
If you have a very deep mattress - 30 cm (11.8 inches) or deeper - this may be a bit of an issue. 🧐
Adjustable straps - as you find with the Panda mattress topper - can be a bit more practical for deep mattresses.
Need a mattress protector?
We'd always recommend using a mattress protector, even if your topper or mattress has a machine-washable cover.
Waterproof mattress protectors safeguard your mattress against stains, spills, and moisture. 💦
The Simba mattress protector is pricey but a great choice.
You could also try the Nectar mattress protector or the Panda mattress protector as cheaper but also high-quality alternatives.
Simba topper sizes
The Simba Hybrid topper is available in all the standard UK mattress sizes. 🇬🇧
These include:
- Simba mattress topper single: 90 x 190 cm (3' x 6'3")
- Simba mattress topper small double: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
- Simba mattress topper double: 135 x 190 cm (4'4" x 6'3")
- Simba mattress topper king-size: 150 x 200 cm (5' x 6'6")
- Simba mattress topper super king-size: 180 x 200 cm (6' x 6'6")
The wide range of sizes is convenient as it ensures you can get the topper for any size bed!
What does the Simba mattress topper weigh?
The Simba mattress topper can be quite bulky, depending on the size you go for, but it won't weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs).
Here is a breakdown of the sizes and weights:
- Simba mattress topper single: 11.1 kg (24.5 lbs)
- Simba mattress topper small double: 13.4 kg (29.5 kg)
- Simba mattress topper double: 14.5 kg (32 lbs)
- Simba mattress topper king-size: 16.5 kg (36.4)
- Simba mattress topper super king-size: 19.1 kg (42.1 lbs)
Luckily, mattress toppers won't have to be moved often as your mattress protector and bedding will stretch above the topper itself.
Simba mattress topper depth
The Simba Hybrid topper has a depth of 7 cm (2.7 inches).
This is a good depth for toppers, above the industry standard of 5 cm (1.9 inches). 🥳
It also ensures that the topper really does change the way your mattress feels!
You do have to be careful, though, that your fitted sheets will fit over the depth of the topper and your mattress.
The Simba Performance fitted sheet is a good option and is available in all standard UK king, UK double, and UK single sizes. 👑
These are designed to fit over mattresses up to 40 cm deep (15.7 inches).
While you're kitting out your bedroom, you can also look at the Simba Performance bed linen set.
This includes a duvet cover and two pillowcases to complete your Simba look.
Simba mattress topper prices
The Simba mattress topper is an excellent product, but it is much more expensive than other mattress toppers on the market.
Silentnight mattress toppers, for example, are available at a mere fraction of the price. 😳
And comparable quality products, like the Panda mattress topper, are also much cheaper.
The premium price is primarily because of the hybrid nature of the topper.
Pocket sprung products are generally more expensive than all-foam products - except, of course, if you're opting for anything from Tempur!
Luckily, though, Simba offers frequent discounts and promotions - more on this below. 👇
(Note: prices listed below are regular prices excluding any current coupons & discounts)
Simba mattress topper discounts
Even though Simba products are on the higher end of the price range, the company does offer frequent discounts and promotions.
Most Simba discounts are available for the mattresses.
But, you'll also find "percentage-off" vouchers for purchases above a certain price range, which you can use for the Simba mattress accessories.
We collect all of the best discounts on our discounts page.
If there are any Simba mattress topper discounts currently running, we'll also display them throughout this article.
Simba delivery conditions
Like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Simba Hybrid topper is delivered rolled up and boxed. 📦
Delivery is free of charge within the UK mainland.
It usually takes place within 1 - 3 working days.
You can also choose additional delivery services at an extra cost, including two-man delivery and next-day delivery.
Simba mattress toppers are much smaller and lighter than the actual mattress, but the box is still quite large, so you may need a bit of help to carry it if you're of a more petite build. 💪
We needed a bit of help for our Simba topper review.
How do you unpack your Simba mattress topper?
Like the Simba mattress, the mattress topper is compressed.
Unboxing it is very simple:
- Open the box on top of your mattress and roll out your mattress topper.
- Cut off the plastic wrapping.
- Roll out the topper across your bed.
- Leave it to expand for at least 2 hours.
Your topper should be fully expanded in a maximum of 24 hours. ⏰
What's that smell?
Many bed-in-a-box mattresses and sleep products emit a chemical smell when you first unpack them. 🧪
This is called off-gassing, and it's completely normal.
The fumes aren't toxic, but they can be really unpleasant.
We'd always recommend that you unpack your new bed products in a well-ventilated room and let them air until the smell disappears. 🏡
Off-gassing doesn't always happen, but it is pretty common.
We experienced severe off-gassing when we first unpacked the topper for our Simba mattress topper review. 😱
It took 3 or 4 days for the smell to disappear completely.
We didn't have any problems after that.
Does the Simba mattress topper come with a trial period?
The Simba mattress topper comes with a standard 14-day return policy.
But, Simba knows that it's essential to try a mattress topper to see if it suits you.
Usually, products returned within 14 days have to be unopened and unused.
Luckily, the Simba mattress topper comes with a 14-night trial.
This means you can actually test out the topper at home to see if it works for you and your mattress.
Fourteen days isn't long.
Competitive products, like the Panda mattress topper, come with a 30-night trial period. 🗓
But 14 days is still plenty to see if you like a product - or hate it.
If you're not convinced, you can return the product and get a full refund. 💷
This makes the Simba Hybrid mattress topper a completely risk-free investment!
What if you need a new mattress?
Mattress toppers are great but they can't fix all of your mattress-related problems.
If you have an old mattress that's worn out or sagging, you will have to buy a brand new mattress.
So how do you know if you need a new mattress or a new mattress topper? 🤔
If you have a high-quality mattress that's in a good condition but just a little too firm for you, then you probably only need a mattress topper.
But also ask yourself the following questions:
- Is my mattress old, worn out, or sagging?
- Is my mattress too soft and do I sink into the foams too deeply?
- In the case of spring mattresses, do I feel the springs in my back?
- In the case of foam mattresses, are there visible dents that I feel while sleeping?
If the answer to any of these is "yes", then you'd probably need a new mattress. ✅
Our favourite UK mattresses:
Is the Simba Hybrid mattress topper worth the money?
There's no denying that the Simba Hybrid topper is an excellent mattress topper. 🏅
But, it is quite a bit more expensive than other mattress toppers on the market.
If you have the budget, this is an excellent buy.
If not, we'd recommend you turn to comparable quality products that offer much better value for money, like the Panda mattress topper.
