A hybrid mattress combines different layers to create an exceptional feeling of comfort.
The Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress layers include:
1. Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress cover
The Hypnia's advanced layers are wrapped in a highly breathable quilted cooling cover.
This Air-wave fabric cover is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 [1] certified and hypoallergenic, so you don’t have to worry about any nasty chemicals.
It also has handles on the bottom side, which we almost overlooked.
Typically, mattresses have handles on the side, but we found the handles underneath made the mattress much easier to move.
Unfortunately, the cover is not removable or washable.
We generally prefer washable covers as they help prevent dust mites and bacteria from building up inside the mattress, which is particularly beneficial for those with allergies.
2. Memory foam layer
The mattress's top layer (so the bit you initially feel) is a 2 cm (0.78") premium memory foam layer.
This provides a soft and snuggly feeling to the Hypnia memory foam mattress.
Memory foam also moulds around pressure points, reducing the feeling of aches in your hips and shoulders.
3. Cloud-zoned foam
The zoning foam layer adapts to the body, allowing the spine to remain neutral.
The Hypnia Hybrid contains 6 cm (2.36") of foam for support and pressure relief. 🥰
4. Pocket springs with 5 support zones
Pocket-sprung mattresses have individual springs in separate pockets distributed across the mattress.
This allows them to work independently, providing the best level of support for the body.
It also helps absorb motion, meaning you shouldn’t feel your partner moving around at night.
Pocket springs have excellent breathability, as the gaps between the springs encourage airflow throughout the mattress, keeping you cool.

What does sleeping on the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress feel like?
Overall, we had a positive experience sleeping on the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress.
We found that:
- It supported the entire body throughout the night
- It moulded around pressure points, preventing aches and pains
- We slept undisturbed and felt no movement from our partner on the other side
- We woke up feeling refreshed and energised
However, not everyone will have the same experience when trying a new mattress. 🤔
That's why we trialled two testers with different weights in each sleeping position to get a better idea of suitability.
Is the Hypnia Hybrid suitable for side sleepers?
Side sleeping is the most popular sleeping position [2].
We tried the side sleeping position for two different body weights and heights:

Our average-weight female tester is typically more suited to a medium-feel mattress, while our heavier male tester would usually feel more supported on a firmer mattress.
The Hypnia Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress, which makes it a more versatile choice.

As you can see, the Hypnia Hybrid mattress moulds around the body shape of both testers whilst still keeping the spine lifted. 🏋️
The memory foam layer absorbs additional pressure from the hips, shoulders, and knees.
Simultaneously, the support foam and pocket spring layers encourage the spine to remain neutral.
Lighter-weight side sleepers may find that the mattress doesn’t mould around the joints as well as other alternatives.
As the Hypnia is a medium-firm mattress, it might be slightly too firm for some lightweight sleepers.
We’d encourage side sleepers under 9 stone (126 lbs) to consider a softer option, such as the Simba Hybrid.
Is the Hypnia Hybrid suitable for back sleepers?
Back sleeping is the best position for the body as this takes the most pressure off the spine and joints.
Back sleepers generally do well on a medium-firm mattress with some contouring and plenty of support.
We tested the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress in the back sleeping position:
The images show the mattress contouring around the heavier regions of both sleepers.
The back remains lifted, and the spine aligns with the neck.
We found the Hypnia Hybrid mattress highly comfortable in the back sleeping position during sleep.
Overall, we think this mattress is very suitable for back sleepers of most body types. ✔️
Is the Hypnia Hybrid suitable for stomach sleepers?
Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress.
This is because stomach sleeping puts a lot of pressure on the spine.
A firmer mattress takes off some of this pressure by keeping the spine in a neutral position.
While testing the Hypnia Hybrid, the spine stayed reasonably straight in the stomach sleeping position.
However, any slight bend would create back pain after a long period.
Lightweight stomach sleepers should find the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress firm enough to support them.
But heavier weights should choose a firmer mattress.
The Origin Hybrid is one of the firmest mattresses we've tested.
Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress firmness
Hypnia rates the Original Hybrid as a 6/10 (medium level of support) but, for us, it felt more like a medium-firm mattress.
We rated it as a 7/10 on our Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
We also ran some sinkage depth and edge support tests (see below), where we concluded that the Hypnia mattress has:
- Appropriate sinkage for average and heavier weights in the side sleeping position
- Appropriate sinkage for average and heavier weights in the back sleeping position
- Appropriate sinkage for average weights in the stomach sleeping position
- Too much sinkage for heavier weights in the stomach sleeping position
- Good edge support all around
If you're on the heavier side and sleep on your stomach, consider a firm mattress instead.
Measuring sinkage depths: How we tested mattress firmness
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress had a firm, cushiony feel even when concentrating our weight in a seated position.
You can see an example of this below:
Even in the middle of the Hypnia Hybrid mattress, we felt supported and didn't feel like we were sinking into or "stuck" in the mattress. ⚓
We tested the sinkage levels of the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress even further with various sinkage depth tests.
Here is an example:
The picture above shows how much we sink in when we stand on the mattress and concentrate our weight on one specific area.
The sinkage depth is about 17 cm (6.69 inches).
This is much more than the Nectar Hybrid (11.5 cm / 4.5 inches) and the Simba Hybrid (13 cm / 5.11 inches).
We also measured the sinkage depth when we lay in different positions on the mattress.
We tested the sinkage depths for our average-weight and heavier sleep testers and measured the sinkage depths of the pelvis and shoulders.

Measuring edge support
Edge support refers to the stability and support on the perimeter of a mattress.
A mattress with good edge support will feel sturdy and secure when you're sitting or lying on the very edge.
This allows you to sit on the edge of the mattress easily without it sagging or feeling like you are plummeting into the base. 🤿
Edge support also helps prevent that “roll-off” feeling, where you feel like you are tipping out of the bed while sleeping.

We concluded that the Hypnia Hybrid mattress had pretty good edge support overall. ✅
It didn’t sink down too much, and we could sit comfortably on the edge when getting up in the morning or going to bed at night.
Does the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress sleep cool?
Hybrid mattresses like the Hypnia Hybrid are much more breathable than standard memory foam mattresses.
- The pocket spring mattress layer encourages heat built up inside the foam to flow out between the springs.
- Hypnia's quilted air-wave cover is ultra-breathable for even better air circulation, promoting cooler sleep.
Overall, we experienced a cool and comfortable sleep on the Hypnia Hybrid - even on warmer nights.
Is the Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress suitable for couples?
The Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress is a low motion transfer mattress, and we found it fared excellently at absorbing any kind of motion.
- We slept entirely still throughout the night without disturbance, even with our cats jumping on the bed and our partner tossing and turning.
- When waking up at different times, our sleeping partner felt no movement on the other side of the mattress.
Therefore, we highly recommend the Hypnia Hybrid mattress to couples and restless sleepers.

What is the depth of the Hypnia Hybrid?
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress measures 25 cm (9.84”) deep. 📏
However, our mattress was a few centimetres shorter than this, measuring about 23 cm (9”).
This is not uncommon for bed-in-a-box mattresses, but you should contact customer support if your Hypnia Hybrid depth has more than a 2 cm (0.8") difference from what it's supposed to be.
What is the weight of the Hypnia Hybrid mattress?
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress weighs about 40 kg (88 lbs) for a double size.
The exact weight will vary depending on which size you purchase.
Overall, we found the mattress fairly heavy and quite difficult to move, so we would recommend having two people move or rotate it.
You should rotate your mattress every 3 - 6 months.

Our delivery experience
Unfortunately, our Hypnia Hybrid mattress was delayed by around 11 days due to a stock-related issue.
Third-party couriers Arrow XL delivered our Hypnia Hybrid mattress to our room of choice, but we found the couriers were a bit impolite during our delivery.
We’ve had a much more positive delivery process with other brands, such as DreamCloud and Panda.
These mattresses were delivered quickly without delay, and the delivery team was much more friendly.
We've had little experience with Arrow XL in the past, but it wasn't an ideal first impression.
Fortunately, once we unpacked and tested our Hypnia Hybrid mattress, we had a much more positive experience.
Our Hypnia mattress was delivered in a box measuring 46 x 46 x 188 cm (18” x 18” x 74”) but your box may differ slightly depending on the size you order.
A boxed mattress is highly convenient, especially for those who live in flats or maisonettes.
It also means your Hypnia mattress will fit in narrow stairwells or loft bedrooms.
How to unbox your Hypnia Original Hybrid mattress
So, how do you unbox it?
1. Remove it from the cardboard box & unwrap the layer of plastic
2. Unroll the mattress & cut away the last layer of plastic
5. Remove all packaging & wait a few hours
After a few hours, your Hypnia mattress should have fully expanded.
It's hard to believe this full-size mattress came out of that tiny box - it’s like magic! ✨
Experiencing off-gassing: Is that smell normal?
After we unpacked our mattress, we noticed an unusual chemical smell.
This is known as off-gassing [3] and isn’t dangerous.
In fact, customers will experience off-gassing with most memory foam mattresses.
We opened a few windows, and the smell disappeared within an hour. ♨️
The off-gassing was fairly minimal compared to some other mattresses we've tested.
We recommend unboxing your mattress in a well-ventilated room for the best results.
