Panda pillow UK composition

Panda Life is a great value-for-money brand that focuses on producing sustainable memory foam products with eco-friendly bamboo fibres. 🐼

The Panda luxury memory foam bamboo pillow is no different.

This premium pillow features three layers of third-generation Visco memory foam, surrounded by a silky soft bamboo fibre cover.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Panda pillow composition

Unlike other three-layered memory foam pillows, like the Nectar Whole Night's Sleep pillow or the Emma Original pillow, the layers of the Panda bamboo pillow are not adjustable or interchangeable.

Instead, they are moulded together and wrapped in a soft, non-removable 100% polyester cover.

This cover acts as both a pillow protector and mesh fabric cover to enhance airflow. 💨

The latter is a critical feature when it comes to memory foam, which we’ll explain in more detail further down.

Panda pillow
The polyester cover protects the memory foam, while the bamboo cover protects the pillow as a whole.

This one-piece memory foam makes Panda pillows a simple, no-fuss choice for people who don’t want to fiddle around trying to find the right height, firmness, or feel. 🥳

So who exactly is the Panda Life pillow suitable for, and what does sleeping on it feel like?

We’ll get to that in the next section. 👇

What does sleeping on the Panda pillow feel like?

The Panda memory foam pillow is best described as a medium-firm pillow that's suited to a wide variety of sleepers.

Panda memory foam versus traditional pillows

Before we get into the specifics, it's important to consider how memory foam pillows differ from standard pillows. 🤔

How do memory foam pillows differ?

If you've never slept on a memory foam pillow before, you may struggle to imagine what it feels like. 🤯

Memory foam pillows are very different to your traditional down or microfibre pillows.

While traditional pillows are often a lot softer & squishier and can be scrunched up to suit your sleeping style, memory foam pillows are much firmer and sturdier.

This means you can't snuggle with your pillow like you can with a traditional pillow - but you'll also receive unparalleled support.

Try a shredded memory foam pillow like the Simba Hybrid pillow if you want to try memory foam but don't want to give up the snuggle factor.

Is the Panda London pillow a standard memory foam pillow?

That said:

In contrast to some other memory foam pillows we've tried, like the Tempur pillows or the Nectar pillow, the Panda Life pillow is actually a lot more approachable.

It’s much lighter, and also a lot softer. 🧸

Look how tightly the foams can be squeezed together:

This changes the way the pillow feels.

You'll experience soft cushioning and gentle pushback for ample support, contouring, and relief of pressure points.

All of our test sleepers commented on how soft and gently supportive the Panda memory foam pillow is.

It virtually guarantees a good night's sleep. 💤

Even one of our test sleepers, who previously struggled with memory foam pillows as the sturdy foams led to increased tension and heightened upper back pain, commented on the gentle support and soft cushioning.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Great responsiveness

We found that the Panda pillow memory foam bounces back to its original shape faster than expected. 😳

The pillow overall is very responsive.

You won't necessarily see that slow "returning to its original shape" response you'd expect from standard memory foam.

Look at the below illustrations:

Panda memory foam

Panda memory imprint

This is what the memory effect usually looks like.

You can quite starkly see the imprint for a few seconds before the foam returns to normal. ⏰

This isn’t the case with the Panda Life pillow.

The above images actually illustrate the memory foam of the Panda mattress topper, so we know that Panda's 3rd generation memory foam has the same standard effect.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

So why does the Panda bamboo memory foam pillow feel so different?

To figure this out, we hopped on a call with the Panda London team.

Turns out, it has to do with the construction of the pillow. ☎️

So:

The pillow, as we'd mentioned, consists of three layers of memory foam.

But these aren't layers on top of each other.

Instead, it's more like layers surrounding each other, like a little box in a big box in an even bigger box. 📦

  • The very centre (the little box) is quite firm and your "standard" memory foam.
  • The surrounding layer (the big box) is a little softer.
  • The final outside layer (the even bigger box) is even softer.

So the memory foam at the core gives you the memory effect, but the foams surrounding this are a lot softer, squishier, and gentler. 🤗

This explains why the Panda memory foam pillow feels so good to lie on!

Panda pillow layers
The Panda memory foam pillow has an interesting construction.

There's an added bonus, too:

You’ll still get the contouring support that’s standard with memory foam, but you won’t ever feel stuck in the foams. 💃

Standard memory foam really conforms to your shape and makes moving around very challenging, but the Panda Life pillow seems almost light in comparison.

It's a real joy to sleep on. 🥰

You'll even still be able to move your head around from side to side if you want to. 🏃‍♀️

But chances are you won't - our test sleepers all stayed snug and comfortable all night long.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

The right pillow height

The Panda luxury memory foam pillow is not adjustable or customisable. 😕

Instead, it comes in a standard height of 12 cm (4.7 inches).

Panda pillow height
The Panda London pillow is 12 cm (4.7 inches) deep.

This may seem too high or low for some, especially since you can't squish the pillow together to change its loft.

But we actually found this height ideal for a wide variety of sleepers. 👌

Your head shouldn't be raised too high, and your upper spine should stay in its optimal alignment, regardless of your sleeping position.

As a general guideline:

  • Side sleepers usually require a firmer & higher loft pillow to adequately fill the space between neck and mattress.
  • Back sleepers usually require a medium-firm, medium-loft pillow to prevent the head from being pushed too far forwards or backwards.
  • Side sleepers usually require a softer, very low-loft pillow that will keep their spine and neck well-aligned.

The Panda bamboo memory foam pillow should fit comfortably if you're an average-sized back sleeper or a side sleeper, and you shouldn't wake up with any neck pain or tension. 🙍‍♂️🙍‍♀️

pillow alignment
Your neck and spine should always be well-aligned.

If you are of larger build, though, you may find the pillow a little too flat for you - especially if you're a side sleeper.

This is because the distance from your neck to your shoulders is likely to be wider and you need a pillow high enough to fill that space. 📐

Something with a higher loft like the Nectar adjustable pillow (with all three layers) or the Kally adjustable pillow may be better suited to you.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Similarly, if you're a front sleeper, you may find the pillow too high for you.

It does sink down quite a bit with the weight of your head, so it might work but we wouldn't recommend it.

Sleeping on your stomach isn't recommended to begin with but if this is your preferred position, then you need to choose a pillow that creates the least amount of tension.

A very flat pillow that will keep your spine in a straight line (running from your back through your neck to your head) is the preferred choice. 👧

stomach sleeper on pillow
Stomach sleepers generally need a very flat pillow.

If you're a stomach sleeper, we'd suggest you turn to an adjustable pillow, like the Simba Hybrid pillow or the Emma Original pillow, or even consider sleeping without a pillow.

Of course, sleeping on your stomach will always result in some neck and shoulder tension as your head will be turned to one side for the duration of the night.
A good memory foam pillow may give you the support you need to help you sleep more comfortably on your back or side.

Ultimately, the right pillow height very much depends on your specific build and the distance between neck and shoulder.

While we found the pillow a good match for all our test sleepers, it may not be the perfect match for you. 🤷‍♀️

The only way to determine this is to try it out.

Luckily, Panda Life offers a 30-night trial period on all its pillows, so you can test it out for a few nights to see if it suits you.

If not, you can simply send it back and get a full refund. 💰

Choosing the right mattress for your pillow

You may not think that your choice of mattress influences the pillow you should choose.

But since your mattress determines the quality of your sleeping surface, it does actually play a significant role. 🔑

As a general guideline:

  • If you have a very firm mattress, it'd be best to opt for a slightly softer pillow. This is because the mattress will push back quite a bit and not allow your pillow to sink in very deeply.
  • Likewise, if you have a softer mattress, you'd probably do better on a firmer pillow that provides better support and stability overall.

For a medium-firm pillow like the Panda, we'd recommend choosing a medium-firm mattress to match.

Here are some of our favourite mattresses:

Does the Panda pillow sleep hot?

Memory foam is notorious for retaining heat. 🥵

Temperature regulation scale

To help counter this potential problem, Panda introduced temperature-regulating technology in the form of a bamboo fibre cover.

Bamboo has some excellent thermo-regulating properties:

  • It’s highly breathable and allows air to flow freely.
  • The fabric expands with heat (during the summer months), allowing three times as much air to flow through.
  • The material also tightens in the colder months, limiting the passage of air and retaining heat as needed.

These elements will help regulate the temperature of your pillow better. 👍

The mesh fabric that covers the memory foam is also breathable, so air can move through the actual foams freely.

pillow ventilation
Mesh covers enhance overall airflow within a pillow.

We tried the pillow in its natural state without a pillowcase, which is recommended to not hinder the bamboo properties.

If you like bamboo, you may want to read our other bamboo pillow reviews.

We noticed that the Panda London pillow felt warmer than down or synthetic fibre pillows, which can often feel cool to the touch, especially when paired with Egyptian cotton or silk pillowcases. ❄️

But, the pillow never felt too hot, muggy, or clammy - despite testing during a London heatwave!

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Panda pillow cover

We’ve briefly touched upon the Panda pillow cover above, but it’s such an essential aspect of the pillow that it’s worth considering in a bit more detail.

Overall, the pillow comes in a classic style with a plain white cover, with the cute Panda logo in the top left corner. 🐼

Panda pillow cover
The pillow cover features the Panda logo.

The “cute” factor is all over the Panda brand - we’ll elaborate on this when we get to the packaging in the section on delivery below.

The Panda pillow cover is super soft and feels smooth and luxurious to the touch.

Don’t be ashamed if you catch yourself brushing your hand over the cover a few more times to enjoy the luscious silkiness - you’re not alone! ☺️

You’ll find this silky softness in all Panda products, including the luxurious Panda Cloud Duvet, which is probably the smoothest, softest duvet we’ve ever tried.

Soft & silky bamboo fibres

The outer cover of the Panda London pillow is made from 40% bamboo fibres and 60% polyester.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Bamboo is twice as soft as regular cotton, which is why you’ll get that silky feel from Panda products.

Panda bedding has a 320 thread count, which is the equivalent of a 1,200 cotton thread count.

But bamboo also has other notable qualities:

  • It’s very breathable and thermo-regulating, which we’ve already explored in more detail above.
  • It’s very durable, meaning your cover should last you a long time.
  • It’s naturally antibacterial and protects against allergies, dust mites, and bacteria.
  • It’s hypoallergenic, which is great for people with sensitive skin, eczema, or hay fever.
  • It’s one of the most eco-friendly fabrics on the planet, using up to 70% less water than cotton. 💦
  • It’s also the fastest growing plant on earth, making it a perfectly sustainable material.

Panda London mixes the cover with 60% polyester.

Polyester also has some excellent properties:

  • It’s strong & flexible.
  • It dries quickly.
  • It’s resistant to wrinkling and shrinking.

These are the properties you’d want in a cover that already fits quite snugly.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Panda pillow washing label
The washing label is soft and silky.

There is a rather large washing label on the inside of the pillow cover. 🧺

But, it’s made from a silky soft material, so you won’t feel it at all while sleeping (should you choose to leave it in).

Machine-washable cover

Conveniently, the Panda pillow cover has a zip on one side so that you can remove it quite easily. 👌

Even though the cover fits snugly, we had no trouble taking it off or putting it back on again.

Panda London zip
The zip protrudes out slightly.

The zip does protrude out slightly, but we didn’t notice this at all while sleeping - probably because your head tends to stay more still on memory foam pillows.

You can machine-wash the bamboo cover at 40℃. 🛀

You can also tumble dry and dry-clean it.

Wringing, bleaching, and ironing are not recommended as these may cause irreparable damage to the materials.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Panda pillow cover with zip
You can easily remove the Panda pillow cover.

You can’t remove or wash the inner cover, but you can spot-clean it with a damp sponge. 🧽

We go into detailed cleaning instructions for memory foam in the FAQ section of this article.

Do I need a pillowcase for my Panda pillow?

Because the pillow is made from soft, breathable bamboo, Panda London actually recommends sleeping directly on the pillow without a pillowcase.

If you use a pillowcase, it would be a good idea to get a bamboo pillowcase to benefit from the same silky feel and breathability.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Panda pillow cover
Since the cover is removable, you don’t need an additional pillowcase.

For our Panda pillow review, we tried it in its natural state without an extra pillowcase.

But, we found that the cover is quite sensitive - especially to moisture.

It stained pretty easily, and we had to throw it into the wash after the first few nights. 🧺

But after a quick cycle in the wash and a spin in the tumble dryer on low heat, it was as good as new.

That said, we would probably recommend going for an additional pillow cover just in case. 👍

Luckily, Panda Life sells a good selection of bedding in a range of colours as well.

Choose from their 100% bamboo bedding and bamboo & French linen mix.

Try Panda bedding:

Panda pillow size

The Panda London pillow measures 40 x 60 cm (15.7 x 23.6 inches).

It has a height of 12 cm (4.7 inches).

This is slightly smaller than the standard, but the pillow is still large enough to be comfortable.

It'll also look great on any bed, even a king-size.

The pillow weighs 1.8 kg (3.9 lbs). ⚖️

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Panda pillow height
The Panda bamboo memory foam pillow is 12 cm thick.

The one thing we did notice was that our standard pillow cases fit more snugly around the Panda London pillow than other pillows.

This wasn't quite as aesthetically pleasing as we'd hoped, so it may make sense to invest in the actual Panda London pillow cases for a better fit. 🤔

If you're looking for a slightly smaller and lower loft pillow, you can also try other Panda pillows, like the Panda Kids Pillow.

This measures 53 x 38 x 10 cm (20.8 x 14.9 x 3.9 inches).

Panda kids pillows

While we tried the pillow for adults for our Panda pillow review, the company also offers three pillows for kids.

These are:

The Panda kids pillow is exactly like the adult pillow, but it has dimensions of 53 x 38 x 10 cm (20.8 x 14.9 x 3.9 inches). 🧒

This lower loft will be better suited to children or those of a smaller build.

It has been designed for children aged 4 and up.

The Panda toddler pillow is even smaller, measuring 53 x 38 x 6 cm (20.8 x 14.9 x 2.3 inches).

The Panda baby pillow is also similar, but it has a baby-friendly zip and contour-curve design, which is better suited to babies. 👶

The Panda baby pillow measures 45 x 25 x 3 cm (17 x 9.8 x 1.1 inches).

What else does Panda London offer?

Panda may be best known for its memory foam bamboo pillow, but the brand also offers numerous other bedroom accessories. 🛌

Deliveries are usually only exciting because of what’s in the box, but Panda London turns this model upside down and makes the whole experience fun.

All outer packaging is made from 100% recycled materials that can also be fully recycled.

No part of the outer packaging - including the handle - is made from plastic.

Panda pillow handle
Even the handle is made from natural materials.

The only plastic used with the entire delivery is the bag that protects the pillow - but even this is recyclable.

Panda doesn’t use a plain, boring box.

It uses minimal ink, but you’re guaranteed to find cute little notes while unpacking, such as “Hello Beautiful” or “Sweet Dreams” messages. 😴

This turns the whole unpacking experience into a fun extravaganza.

You’ll find cute notes hidden in the Panda pillow box.

Off-gassing

Memory foam products are prone to off-gassing.

This is a chemical smell emitted by the product when first removed from the plastic wrapping.

It’s non-toxic but can be unpleasant, so we’d recommend unpacking all memory foam products in a well-ventilated room. 🏡

We’ve tried a few Panda London products, though, and didn’t experience off-gassing with any of them.

Does the Panda bamboo pillow come with a trial period?

Trial periods may be very common for the best bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they’re not too popular when it comes to pillows.

The Panda pillow, though, comes with a 30-day trial period. 🗓

This is great as it’ll give you the chance to try the pillow at home and see if you like it.

Panda pillow trial period

You may need a few days to get used to memory foam if you’ve never slept on a memory foam pillow before.

If you’re not 100% satisfied with the pillow, you can send it back and get a full refund. 💷

This is at no cost to you: Panda will cover all the admin and expenses of return.

Panda pillow UK guarantee

Panda pillows come with a phenomenal 10-year guarantee.

Most pillows bought online only come with a 1-year or maximum 3-year warranty.

This really demonstrates the confidence Panda has in its high-quality products.

Bamboo, of course, is incredibly durable, so these pillows are made to last.

If you bought your pillow directly from Panda London, your guarantee would automatically be valid. 🤩

But if you’ve bought through a third party, you have to register your product for the 10-year guarantee.

-15% PANDA MEMORY FOAM BAMBOO PILLOW

Should you buy the Panda bamboo memory foam pillow?

Memory foam pillows aren’t for everyone, but if you’d like to try them out, you can’t get much better than the Panda memory foam bamboo pillow.

As our Panda pillow review has hopefully shown, this is a phenomenal product that almost guarantees the perfect night’s sleep. 🏆

We think the Panda bamboo pillow is particularly suitable for:

  • People with neck and shoulder tension.
  • Those struggling with allergies or sensitive skin.
  • Sleepers who change sleeping positions often.
  • Sleepers looking for gentle support that’s not too firm or too soft.
  • People looking for a great trial period & guarantee.
  • Those looking for great value for money.

The Panda pillow may not be the best for those looking for soft & squishy pillows, very heavy sweaters, or stomach sleepers.

But we’d suggest the best way to know is by trying it out.

Luckily, the Panda memory foam pillow comes with a 30-night trial period, giving you plenty of time to test it and see if it’s right for you.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you wash Panda Life pillows?

As with all memory foam pillows, the Panda pillow cannot be washed.

But, there is a way to clean memory foam.

    You will need:

    • Vacuum cleaner
    • Water spray bottle
    • Clean cloth
    • Baking soda
    • Laundry detergent

    Step 1: Vacuum

To start, clean your memory foam product by using a handheld vacuum cleaner with a soft brush.

You can sprinkle some baking soda over the memory foam, which will help absorb any liquids or odours.

Rub the baking soda into the memory foam and leave it to set for 1 hour.

Then, vacuum thoroughly to ensure most of the baking soda has been removed.

Flip and repeat on the other side.

    Step 2: Deep clean

You can skip this step and jump to step three if you don’t have any stains or severe odours.

    Removing stains

Spot clean the foam using a dash of laundry detergent and water in a bucket.

Use a damp cloth and blot the area

Only do this if there has been a spill or accident that’s left a visible stain.

If the stain doesn’t come out, you can sprinkle boric acid over the area and keep blotting until the stain is gone.

Once dry, vacuum once more to remove any chemicals.

    Removing odours

To remove smells, sprinkle the memory foam with baking soda and let it sit overnight or for at least 8 hours before vacuuming the baking soda away.

    Step 3: Finishing touches

Don’t forget to clean both sides of the memory foam.

Do not put the memory foam product back onto your bed unless it’s completely dry.

It’s best to give your product a full 24 hours to dry

    Never soak memory foam

You should never soak memory foam, so hand-washing or machine-washing the product is not an option.

Memory foam absorbs water and takes a very long time to dry.

The ongoing dampness can encourage the growth of mould or bacteria, which can damage your products and cause health concerns.

Luckily, all Panda products come with machine-washable covers.

You can read detailed care instructions here.

  • Has the Panda pillow won any awards?

The Panda memory foam bamboo pillow is an award-winning pillow.

It has received accolades from, amongst others, the Good Housekeeping Institute and T3.

It’s also won the Good Housekeeping Getting Greener 2020 award.

Panda London also has 4.7 out of 5 stars on TrustPilot and 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon UK, with almost 4000 customer reviews.

  • Can you tell me more about Panda Life?

Panda Life, the company behind Panda London, was founded in 2015.

This London-based company makes environmentally-friendly products using bamboo fabric.

Their products offer great value for money.

The company brings luxurious and durable products to the masses while promoting a healthy lifestyle and eco-friendly choices.

  • Can I buy the Panda pillow via Amazon or other retailers?

Yes, you can buy the Panda pillow via Amazon in the UK and at other approved sellers like Costco and Dunelm.

But, the 30-night trial period and 10-year guarantee aren’t a given when purchasing from third-party retailers.

That’s why we always recommend purchasing from the brand directly.
