    Thanksgiving [1] began as a holiday of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and the preceding year. It is still one of the most firmly upheld traditions of American culture.

    Since most Americans used this Friday to start their Christmas shopping, Black Friday generated massive retail sales.

    Many stores started opening up early in the morning on Black Friday and offered special deals, and so Black Friday as we know it today was born.

    But even though Black Friday was originally an American shopping experience, the rest of the world has begun to follow these traditions. 🌎

    This is no different in the UK, where many retailers have hopped on the Black Friday bandwagon, with sales sometimes running for an entire week - or longer.

  • Why is it called Black Friday?

    Since this day marked the start of the Christmas shopping season, businesses were usually able to turn a profit. 

    This means they could go from being 'in the red' (that is, losing money) to turning a profit, referred to as 'going into the black'.

    It is commonly believed that this is the root of the term Black Friday.

    But, this isn't entirely true.

    It actually dates back to police officers in 1960s Philadelphia [2], who used the term to describe the chaos caused by large crowds coming into the city to start their Christmas shopping.
