Nectar Hybrid mattress composition
The Nectar Hybrid is a thick hybrid memory foam mattress that combines the benefits of the Nectar original mattress with an additional layer of springs. 🌀
The mattress has four layers, plus a quilted cooling cover.
The four layers are:
- Dynamic support layer
- Micro-spring layer
- A pressure-relieving memory foam layer
- 7-zone supportive base
All layers of foam used in the Nectar Hybrid mattress are of a high density and Certipur-certified [1]. 🌱
This means that they’re free from harmful chemicals and toxins. ⚗️
Let’s look at the Nectar Hybrid mattress layers in more detail.
Nectar Hybrid mattress layers
The different layers of the Nectar Hybrid work together to offer the optimal level of comfort, support, and breathability. 💤
1. Dynamic support layer
The top comfort layer of the Nectar Hybrid mattress is made of an open-cell breathable polyfoam. 💨
This creates a good level of support (to avoid that “stuck-in-memory-foam” feeling) and helps regulate body temperature.
2. Micro-spring layer
The second layer of the Nectar Hybrid mattress is unique to this mattress.
It consists of up to 1,600 individually encapsulated springs. 🌀
These pocket springs provide micro-adjustments for additional comfort and ease of movement.
The spring layer also dramatically enhances the mattress’s breathability, making it better suited to hot sleepers.
3. Pressure-relieving memory foam
The third layer is made of high-quality memory foam.
Memory foam is known for its body-contouring properties.
The foam adapts well to the shape of your body for effective pressure relief and orthopaedic support. 🤗
4. 7-zone supportive base layer
The cold foam base layer provides stability and support to the mattress.
It is divided into seven contour zones. 7️⃣
These have been designed to respond to your body, allowing for more sinkage where needed and more lift when required.
Overall, the zones enable healthy spinal alignment, preventing back and shoulder pains.
Nectar Hybrid mattress firmness
Even though hybrid mattresses are often firmer than pure foam mattresses, this isn't the case with Nectar.
In fact, the Nectar Hybrid mattress is rated as slightly softer than the Nectar original mattress!
We'd place it at a 6.5 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. 🧱
This is the same firmness as the all-foam Nectar Premier mattress.
But, overall, it is still a medium-firm mattress that offers a good balance of comfort and support.
This also makes it suitable for a wide variety of sleepers. 👨👩👧👦
Nectar Hybrid sinkage tests
To give a true and accurate interpretation of the firmness level of the Nectar Hybrid mattress, we relied on sinkage tests. 🧮
These give a good indication of how a mattress will feel for a variety of sleepers.
For our first test, we measured how much we sank into the Nectar Hybrid when all weight was focused in the middle of the mattress.
The above image shows that the average sinkage was about 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) when weight was focused on one area.
This is slightly deeper than the Nectar original memory foam mattress, which has a firmer feel and a sinkage depth of around 10 cm (3.9 inches).
We also tested the mattress's support in different sleeping positions by measuring sinkage depths in the pelvic and shoulder regions.
Here are our results:
Person A (167 cm / 5'4" and 54 kg / 119 lbs) | Person B (179 cm / 5'8" and 98 kg / 216 lbs) | |
Sleeping on the side: |
Shoulder: 5 cm (1.9 inches) Pelvis: 4.5 cm (1.7 inches) |
Shoulder: 6.5 cm (2.5 inches) Pelvis: 5 cm (1.9 inches) |
Sleeping on the back: |
Shoulder: 3 cm (1.1 inches) Pelvis: 3.5 cm (1.3 inches) |
Shoulder: 4 cm (1.5 inches) Pelvis: 4 cm (1.5 inches) |
Sleeping on the stomach: |
Shoulder: 3.2 cm (1.2 inches) Pelvis: 4 cm (1.5 inches) |
Shoulder: 3.5 cm (1.3 inches) Pelvis: 4.5 cm (1.7 inches) |
As these results indicate, there was moderate sinkage in all positions for both body weights. ⚖️
We concluded that this mattress performed best in the side sleeping position, which allowed for a good amount of sinkage to absorb pressure from the hips and shoulders.
However, we would not recommend this mattress for stomach sleepers as we found there was too much sinkage overall.
We look at this in more detail further down. 👇
Edge support
Edge support refers to how much weight a mattress can carry at the very edge of the bed. ⛰
The best edge support will show little to no sinkage when you sit on the edge of the mattress.
We tested edge support in two ways:
- Sitting and kneeling on the side of the bed.
- Sleeping on the edge of the mattress.
You can view the below two images to see this.
Overall, the Nectar Hybrid has good edge support. 👌
The mattress displayed some moderate sinkage when sitting or kneeling on the edge of the bed, due to all weight being concentrated in a small area.
During sleep, however, we felt supported up to the very edge of the mattress and did not feel like we were rolling off the sides. 🥳
This means you can enjoy the entire width of your mattress.
What does sleeping on the Nectar Hybrid mattress feel like?
The Nectar Hybrid felt almost identical to sleeping on the Simba Hybrid.
It’s a very comfortable mattress with good support, average edge support, and great motion isolation.
Hybrid mattresses aim to provide the best features of their base materials.
The Nectar Hybrid mattress combines the comfort and orthopaedic support of a memory foam mattress with additional spring benefits. 🌀
When we slept on the Nectar Hybrid, we felt:
- A cushioning layer of soft foam that adapted to the shape of the body.
- An undisturbed and refreshed feeling of sleep.
- Comfort in most positions, but particularly in the side sleeping position.
- Well-supported and good relief of pressure on the hips, shoulders, and knees.
Overall, we'd say that the Nectar Hybrid is an incredibly comfortable mattress. 😴
But, we wouldn't recommend it to all sleepers.
Let's explore this in a bit more detail. 👇
Is the Nectar Hybrid good for side sleepers?
The Nectar Hybrid mattress was most comfortable in the side sleeping position. 🙌
The responsive memory foam is cushioned around pressure point areas such as the hips and shoulders.
At the same time, we felt supported by the spring layer, which encouraged natural spinal alignment.
A mattress that is too soft or firm can create a bend in the spine, which is why those with an unsuitable mattress may wake up with lower back pain.
The Nectar Hybrid strikes a perfect balance between support and comfort. 🤗
Is the Nectar Hybrid good for back sleepers?
We also felt well supported in the back sleeping position.
In this position, the mattress contoured around the heavier regions without being too soft. ☁️
Back sleeping is the healthiest position [2] for your sleep as it puts the least pressure on the spine and organs.
The Nectar Hybrid encouraged a feeling of weightless sleep in this position.
Is the Nectar Hybrid suitable for stomach sleepers?
Despite being comfortable in most positions, we felt the Nectar Hybrid might be too soft for stomach sleepers.
Stomach sleepers need a firm to extra firm mattress that keeps the spine completely straight.
As a medium-firm mattress, the Nectar Hybrid is not the most suitable. 👎
In this position, there was a slight bend in the spine, which can cause tension and create lower back pain.
The stomach sleeping position puts the most pressure on the spine, so it's crucial to find a suitably firm mattress.

Is the Nectar Hybrid good for couples and restless sleepers?
Motion transfer can be a dealbreaker when deciding on a mattress to share with your partner.
A low-motion transfer mattress is a fantastic option for couples and restless sleepers. 👩❤️👨
What is low motion transfer?
Motion transfer refers to the transfer of movement in a mattress. ⛵
A mattress with high motion transfer will feel bouncy.
You'll feel this movement when your partner moves around in bed.
High motion transfer mattresses are typically coil sprung, as the springs are connected throughout the mattress, creating a steady wave of movement. 🤹
Low motion transfer mattresses can come as memory foam or pocket spring mattresses.
These are much better at absorbing movement.
Is the Nectar Hybrid high or low motion transfer?
The Nectar Hybrid is a low motion transfer mattress and absorbs movement well. ✔️
We experienced an undisturbed sleep throughout the night and didn't feel any movement across the mattress.
Still not convinced? 🤔
Check out the video below to see how well the Nectar Hybrid absorbs motion:
Our testing concluded that the Nectar Hybrid is an excellent choice for couples or those who move around a lot during sleep.
You should experience a more restful and uninterrupted sleep on this mattress. 😴
Does the Nectar Hybrid sleep hot?
Even though the Nectar original mattress offers good temperature regulation, the Nectar Hybrid takes this up a notch. 🧊
The mattresses feature:
- A top layer of open-cell foam designed to be more breathable & allow for better temperature regulation.
- An adaptive cooling cover to provide non-stop airflow, carrying heat and moisture away from the body.
The Nectar Hybrid also has the additional benefits of springs.
Spring mattresses are generally the coolest as they allow for the most ventilation. 🌬
This is because the spaces between the springs create natural ventilation channels, allowing air to move freely through the material.
Think of it this way:
- Memory foam is like a brick, and blowing air onto the brick won't result in any airflow on the opposite side. 🧱
- A spring layer is like a brick with massive holes that pass through the entire width of the brick.
- If you blow air onto the side of this brick, it'll pass through the holes quite quickly, and you can feel the airflow on the other side.
The spring layer is like the brick with holes - air can flow freely, carrying away excess heat and moisture and keeping you cooler and more comfortable. ❄️
Naturally, then, mattresses with spring layers will allow for better breathability overall.
Hybrid mattresses still contain a significant amount of foam, so they won't be as cooling as pure spring or pocket sprung mattresses.
But, they are much better suited to hot sleepers and heavier sweaters than pure memory foam mattresses. 🔥
So, how did we sleep on the Nectar Hybrid?
Is the Nectar Hybrid good for hot sleepers?
We slept at a reasonable temperature on the Nectar Hybrid mattress. 🌡
There were occasions, such as when the central heating was on, when our sleep felt a little warm.
However, we didn't overheat during sleep or feel uncomfortable on this mattress.
If you are a naturally hot sleeper, though, we recommend avoiding memory foam altogether. 🥵
Instead, consider a pocket sprung mattress or one with natural fillings such as latex.
Good cooling mattresses:
Nectar Hybrid mattress cover
The Nectar Hybrid mattress cover features a white quilted polyester cooling top cover that draws heat away from your body.
The cover has a diamond pattern quilted design that is soft and thick. 💎
The side of the cover features blue piping and a grey knit fabric.
The cover feels like good quality, but it did crease at times due to the fabric being stretchier than non-removable covers.
Can you wash the Nectar Hybrid mattress cover?
Unfortunately, the Nectar Hybrid mattress cover is not machine-washable. 🧺
This isn't a train smash as many other mattresses we love, like the Simba Hybrid, also don't have a washable cover.
But it does mean you need to take extra care to protect your mattress.
However, whilst the cover is not washable, it is removable.
How do I remove the Nectar Hybrid mattress cover?
You can remove the cover easily with the zipper along the side of the mattress.
We recommend removing the cover during the summer months and letting it breathe outside to remove moisture build-up.
You can also spot-wash the cover if need be. 🧼
But, we'd also always recommend using a waterproof mattress protector.
A mattress protector will safeguard your mattress against any stains, moisture, spills, or dirt. 💦
The Nectar mattress protector, which we've tried, is pretty fantastic.

Nectar Hybrid mattress UK delivery conditions
All Nectar Hybrid mattresses qualify for free delivery and returns within the UK mainland. 🚛
You should receive your order within 2 working days.
Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Nectar Hybrid is delivered rolled up and vacuum-packed in a compact box. 📦
You can opt for a two-person delivery service (at an additional cost), where the mattress is delivered to a room of your choice.
How do you unpack the Nectar Hybrid mattress?
Unpacking the Nectar Hybrid mattress is pretty straightforward.
- Remove the mattress from the box.
- Cut open the first layer of plastic.
- Unroll the mattress.
- Remove any remaining plastic.
When removing the plastic, be careful not to cut into the mattress itself!
Your mattress will expand as soon as you've removed the first layer of plastic.
It should expand pretty quickly, but it may take a few hours for your mattress to expand fully.
We'd wait up to 6 hours before adding any bedding. ⏰
This also gives the mattress time to breathe.
Check out our unboxing video to see how easy it is:
After unboxing your Nectar Hybrid, you may notice a slight odour.
This is called off-gassing, and it's pretty normal for online mattresses. 🧪
The fumes aren’t toxic or harmful but can be unpleasant.
We'd recommend that you unpack your mattress in a well-ventilated room and let it air out until the smell disappears. ⛅️
Old mattress removal service
Nectar UK offers an old mattress removal service to save you the trouble of discarding your old mattress.
They charge a small fee for this, but it’s pretty convenient if you’re not sure what to do with your old mattress.
Old mattress removal doesn't take place at the same time as new mattress delivery. 🚛
This is because Nectar relies on its removal partner, AnyJunk, to collect your old mattress.
If mattresses are in good enough condition, they're donated to the British Heart Foundation [4].
Worn mattresses are recycled responsibly. ♻️
Does the Nectar Hybrid mattress come with a trial period?
The Nectar Hybrid mattress comes with an industry-leading 365-night trial period. 🗓
That’s one full year to test the mattress in the comfort of your own home.
We love home trials as they allow you to try the product in various conditions.
It can also take your body a few weeks to get used to a new mattress!
And if you’re not happy, you can send the mattress back and get a full refund. 💰
Should you buy the Nectar Hybrid mattress?
The Nectar Hybrid mattress is an excellent buy. 🌟
But should you buy the more expensive Nectar Hybrid over the Nectar memory foam mattress?
That depends on your requirements.
We’d recommend the Nectar Hybrid mattress to:
- Side and back sleepers.
- Couples and restless sleepers.
- Cold/warm sleepers (but not hot-hot sleepers).
- People who can be indecisive (365-day trial).
If you’re looking for that extra touch of luxury, the Nectar Hybrid is the way to go.
