BRUNO NO LONGER OPERATES IN THE UK.

Bruno Interior is a sleep company first founded in Germany.

Though a relative newcomer to the UK sleep world, the team is already set on impressing the British market with high-quality, durable, and versatile products.

We sat down with one of Bruno's Managing Directors, Marc Pohl [1], to learn more about the company and its plans for the UK.

Let's dive right in.

Introducing Bruno Interior

To start, let's take a closer look at the history of Bruno Interior and learn more about the company as a whole.

Could you share a little on the history of Bruno as a company?

"Bruno was founded as a mattress start-up in Germany in 2015 with the goal of making mattresses-in-a-box easy to buy for customers.

The company developed the one-fits-all Bruno mattress, which can easily be ordered online and trialled at home for 30 days at no extra cost.

Over time, the product portfolio expanded to include other sleep furniture, and the former start-up has now become an established sleep furniture brand.

From the beginning, the focus has been on perfect sleep and quality made in Germany."

Can you tell us a little bit more about the Bruno bear logo?

"During the development process of the Bruno brand, there were various names and logos to choose from, all of which were associated with the theme of sleep.

Both the logo and the brand name had to radiate attraction and closeness, be easy to pronounce, and be associated with the products.

Eventually, the decision was made in favour of Bruno the Bear: the bear has a very empathetic effect and awakens nostalgic memories; at the same time, it fits the theme of sleep, and, in connection with the name Bruno, a feeling of closeness is created."

How would you describe Bruno's brand voice and messaging?

"Bruno stands for quality, design, and excellent service.

The customers are the focus of communication before, during, and after the purchase. We rely on respectful, transparent communication, without just marketing talk, and focus more on facts and less on unrealistic figures of speech.

That way, customers know exactly what they are getting from us.

With a broad target group, we aim to reach all age groups. Therefore, we are not guided by trends but remain true to our line."

Excellent communication and customer service are at the heart of Bruno.

Bruno has grown considerably as a company. What accomplishments are you most proud of?

"We at Bruno are particularly proud of having transitioned from a mattress start-up to a broad-based furniture company and that we have always remained true to ourselves along the way.

The brand identity has grown up without forgetting where we come from and what is most important to us: giving our customers the best quality and perfect sleep.

With this guiding principle and our passion, we have successfully opened new markets, and I am confident that many more will follow."

The Bruno sleep products

Now that we've had a closer look at the company, let's discuss Bruno sleep products in the UK and beyond.

Which product would you consider Bruno's flagship product?

"Our hero product is the Bruno sofa bed.

The sofa bed is available in different versions and stands out with its simple design.

The best thing about it is that it contains pocket springs, known in German as a "box spring bed": this technology is unique and gives that very special Bruno comfort.

Thanks to the patented folding mechanism, the sofa bed is easily unfolded in just 15 seconds!

The same technology is also used in our recently launched corner sofa.

There is a suitable variant for every room size, and the best sleep is guaranteed thanks to the box spring technology."

How do you ensure the quality, safety, and durability of your sleep products?

"For our products, we use controlled, certified solid wood from Europe and sophisticated technologies that we optimise until they meet our requirements.

From the processing of the pocket springs to the selection of robust upholstery fabric, we control every step of the local factories.

The finished prototypes are then closely scrutinised by our quality team.

We are also constantly developing our products to meet the demands of the times and satisfy customers' needs."

How does the UK market differ from the other European markets you operate in?

"Bruno launched in the UK market in March 2023, so it's still quite young.

We wanted to be present in this market because we believe that buying online in the UK is something people do daily, from grocery stores to big bulky furniture.

We believe our products are a good fit because our design is minimalistic yet modern, and can fit into any kind of house.

The UK market is different in terms of living space - we are aware that houses in the UK are usually tight but developed in height, while the rest of the countries we operate in are entirely the opposite, with larger houses but a maximum of one upper floor."

Online shopping is well-established in the UK.

What are some of the difficulties you've faced with launching in the UK?

"UK law is different from European law, which brings to the table various differences when it comes to product certifications such as fire resistance, for example.

It took a bit more time for our team to make sure the products we ship to the UK are compatible with UK standards.

For some products, we are still on it but confident that, slowly but surely, we will be able to offer a wider range of products.

In terms of logistics, we were actually very lucky, given that, in the UK, it's so common to rely on local logistics suppliers; after some price comparisons, we were happy to choose Furdeco [2] as our logistics partner."

Do you have any new product launches in the UK that you're particularly excited about?

"It's not only about the products but also the colours.

We recently developed the colour green for the UK market, and we hope it will be as successful as in other countries. It took some extra months to produce it for the UK.

Besides the green colour, which might seem like a small thing but, for us, is actually quite big, we are also going to launch the corner sofa sometime soon.

The corner sofa is as modulable as our normal sofa bed but it contains storage space where you can place anything you want.

The corner sofa also becomes a bed; we can't wait to launch it!

Next year, we will focus more on accessories such as the bed chest and the footstool.

There is also an idea to develop more beds in the pipeline, but I don't want to ruin all the surprises."

Bruno, sustainability, and community

Sustainability in today's world cannot be overemphasised.

Let's see how Bruno tackles this.

How do you prioritise sustainability in your production process?

"Sustainability plays an essential role in our production process: In manufacturing our products, we pay attention to the use of high-quality, natural materials that are particularly resilient and last for years.

We consider long-term durability to be essential in the context of sustainability.

Furthermore, we produce exclusively in factories in Germany and Poland. The short delivery routes ensure lower CO2 emissions and thus benefit the environment.

We also aim to continue optimising our products' packaging and making them as environmentally friendly as possible."

How does Bruno decide on which community initiatives to support?

"At Bruno, social commitment is important, of course.

As part of our annual Christmas donation, we choose a sponsor whose work is particularly close to our hearts.

Die Arche [3] helps children and families in need, which we consider a great social contribution and are happy to support financially.

The Bärenwald in Müritz [4] and the Plant-My-Tree [5] initiative focus on nature conservation and preserving the natural habitat.

By relying on natural materials in our production chain, we are particularly concerned with giving something back and protecting the environment.

In this way, we preserve the space we need to produce our furniture and do our part to preserve the natural spaces vital to us humans."

The future of Bruno

Before concluding, let's see what's in store for Bruno.

What's your long-term vision for Bruno in the sleep industry?

"Our goal is to take Bruno even further as a well-known e-commerce company and to establish it sustainably in foreign markets.

In doing so, we rely on a well-studied product portfolio, within which each product is specialised to give our customers the best possible sleep or to complement our main products.

Thus, there will continue to be a mix of sleep furniture and accessories tailored to the respective markets in the future.

We want to stay true to our core values and continue to focus on outstanding quality, local production, and innovative design as we expand our range."

What do you find most rewarding about helping people sleep better?

"People spend about a third of their lives in bed.

Sleep is not only physiologically essential for us humans, but also particularly important in terms of our well-being and mental state.

Reason enough to make the time during sleep as pleasant as possible!

To ensure this, the entire Bruno team does its best every day.

If our customers sleep better because of us, if back pain can be alleviated and prevented, and if you feel you are in good hands with us, that is our greatest incentive.

Positive customer conversations and reviews make us more than happy and are our highest reward."
