What it feels like to sleep on the Emma Premium mattress
The Emma Premium mattress is soft and comfortable but also offers excellent support and stability. 💪
This is largely due to its unique composition, which is comprised of memory foam, pocket springs, and Airgocell technology.
Maximum comfort
The upper comfort layers provide much of that sleeping-on-a-cloud feeling you also experience on the Emma Original.
Both Airgocell and memory foam are highly adaptable foams that conform to your body shape.
This provides body-hugging comfort. 🤗
Meanwhile, the supportive spring layer prevents motion disturbance and promotes optimal spinal alignment.
Side sleeping
The Emma Premium was very comfortable when testing the side sleeping position. 😴
It provided enough sinkage for side sleepers, allowing heavier body parts to sink in more deeply.
Moreover, we felt supported by the layers, with the body remaining lifted and the spine neutrally aligned.
See how the mattress contours around the body in the side position:
However, it might feel a bit too firm for lightweight side sleepers who may not sink as deeply.
Experiencing aches in the joints or back might indicate you need a softer mattress.
Back sleeping
The Emma Premium is most comfortable for back sleepers. 👍
The back remained straight for both male and female testers, while foam layer contoured around the pelvis, providing pressure relief in this area.
This makes the Emma Premium an excellent mattress for orthopaedic concerns and ensures you won't wake up with lower back pain or tension.
See how the mattress contours around the hips:
As a medium-firm mattress, the Emma Premium provides the perfect balance of support and comfort in this position.
Stomach sleeping
The Emma Premium is a suitable choice for lightweight stomach sleepers.
However, our testers experienced some discomfort when sleeping in this position.
You can see a very slight bend in the lower back:
The Emma Premium mattress might not be suitable if you feel neck or back pain.
We'd recommend the Origin Hybrid mattress for stomach sleepers looking for firmer support. 🧱
Take a look below:
Emma Premium mattress firmness
Emma rates the Premium as a medium-firm mattress that's equal in firmness to the Emma Original.
We'd rate it as slightly firmer and have placed it at 7 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest.
Good edge support
The pocket springs are encased by sturdy foam walls, which allow for greater stability across the surface of the mattress.
This means that you can experience the same level of firmness no matter where you lie on the mattress.
See how the Emma Premium fared during our edge test:
As you can see, you can sit on the edge of the Emma Premium with minimal sinking. ⚓
The Emma Premium has much better edge support than the Emma Original.
This edge-to-edge support is great if you want to enjoy the full width of the mattress, which is especially important if you're sharing your bed with a partner. 💑
Measuring sinkage depths
We tested the Emma Premium mattress to determine its sinking levels when weight was distributed differently across its surface.
A specific sinking amount isn't set in stone for mattresses.
However, varying sinking levels cater to different body weights and sleeping positions.
You can see how much the Emma mattress sank when all our weight was concentrated in one area:
The Emma Premium had a sinking depth of around 14 cm (5.5"), which is about the same amount as the Emma Original.
This is moderately more sinkage than other hybrid mattresses, such as the Simba Hybrid (12 cm / 4.7") and the Nectar Hybrid (11.5 cm / 4.5").
The sinking depth translates to how supportive or body-hugging a mattress can feel.
We'd generally recommend a mattress with a high sinking depth for side and back sleepers who need more cushioning around the joints.
However, stomach sleepers will feel more supported on a mattress with very minimal sinking.
Does the Emma Premium sleep hot?
The Emma Premium mattress is designed to enhance breathability. 🌬️
This design includes:
- An UltraDry cover with moisture-wicking technology
- Point Elastic Airgocell technology for temperature regulation
- AeroFlex spring technology that promotes airflow
Memory foam generally retains more heat than other types of foam, making it unsuitable for people who prefer a cooler sleep.
But the hybrid design promotes air circulation, making this a cooler option than all-foam mattresses.
How does the Emma Premium match up?
We used a thermographic camera to see how well the Emma Premium regulated our temperature. 🌡️
One tester pointed the thermographic camera at our sleeping tester in the morning before they woke up.
Our bodies naturally cool down during the night and return to normal in the morning, so this gave us a good indication of the warmest the Emma Premium would feel during sleep.
Take a look at our results:
Our male sleeper, who typically sleeps hot, experienced results of 32.1°C, while our cooler female tester averaged a temperature of 25.7°C.
These results are significantly higher than the recommended sleeping temperature of 18.3°C (65°F).
Both testers agreed they felt reasonably warmer on the Emma Premium than on other hybrid mattresses like the Simba Hybrid.
Therefore, we'd recommend hot sleepers opt for a cooler mattress option.
However, other factors are at play that can contribute to how hot or cold you feel during sleep.
We considered these variables:
- The room temperature was 21°C on the thermostat
- Our testers were using an 8.0 tog duck-down duvet
- Our tester's sheets were 90% polyester, 10% cotton
These factors seem minimal but can make a big difference in your overall temperature.
If you sleep hot, we recommend keeping the room cool and opting for a lighter tog duvet and natural sheets, which are much more breathable. ❄️
Take a look at these options:
Is the Emma Premium a good choice for couples?
A mattress's suitability for couples largely hinges on its motion transfer.
This refers to the movement felt across the mattress.
The Emma Premium offers excellent edge support and impressive motion isolation. 💪
Our testers experienced no disturbance during the night, even with different sleep schedules. 🌙
With barely any movement felt, our testers woke up in the same position they fell asleep in.
We highly recommend the Emma Premium for couples and restless sleepers.
Emma Premium mattress composition
The Emma Premium is a five-layer luxury mattress that combines various high-quality foams with a core of 12.5 cm (4.9 inches) pocket springs.
The result?
One of Emma's most advanced and innovative mattresses. 🥳
This is a no-turn mattress with a specific right way up, but you still need to rotate the mattress regularly.
Regularly turning your mattress can prevent it from dipping and creating an uneven surface, enhancing its lifespan and overall comfort.
The foam layers, from top to bottom:
- A top comfort layer of breathable Halo memory foam.
- A layer of Airgocell foam.
- A secondary layer of Airgocell memory foam.
- A spring layer of 12.5 cm (4.9 inches) individually wrapped pocket springs.
- Sturdy base layer.
Emma Premium mattress layers
1. Top comfort layer of Halo memory foam
Emma's trademarked Halo foam forms the top comfort layer of the Emma Premium mattress.
This layer is pressure-relieving and body-contouring, providing superior comfort and that "sleeping on a cloud" feeling you can expect from Emma mattresses.
As you can see in the image above, the edges of the foam didn't expand fully.
Typically, a fully-expanded mattress will take on a completely rectangular shape, but with the mattress cover on, this feature was hardly noticeable.
2. Airgocell foam
Visco-elastic memory foam forms the next layer.
Memory foam is often recommended for orthopaedic mattresses as it adapts to the body's shape and relieves pressure well.
This makes the mattress suitable for those struggling with back problems.
The memory foam has been specifically positioned towards the top of the mattress to allow heat to escape. ♨️
One downfall of memory foam is that it retains heat quite well, so it needs to be combined with more breathable materials to reduce the temperature.
The memory foam also provides a final layer of cushioning before the sturdier cold foam and pocket springs.
3. Second layer of Airgocell memory foam
This is an additional cooling layer underneath the memory foam, allowing heat to escape through the bottom of the mattress.
4. Spring layer core with zoned pocket springs
The zoned pocket sprung layer forms the core of the mattress. 💪
In contrast to some other hybrids like the Emma Hybrid or the Simba Hybrid, which feature mini springs, the Emma Premium features a layer of full-sized pocket springs with a height of 12.5 cm (4.9 inches).
This pocket-sprung layer enhances breathability and support.
Each spring is individually wrapped, meaning it can respond to isolated movements, enhancing point elasticity, pressure relief capabilities, and motion isolation.
The pocket spring core is encased by foam walls, allowing for greater stability across the surface of the mattress and enabling edge-to-edge support without the feeling that you'll roll off the mattress if you sleep too far on the side.
5. Base foam layer
The lower foam layer acts as a final supportive and solid base for the mattress.
It has HRX (High Resiliency Extra) for extra stability and support for the spine.
Emma Premium mattress cover
The Emma Premium features a grey-and-white mattress cover in the same style that you've come to expect from the Emma mattress brand.
There are three parts to the mattress cover:
- The removable and washable top cover, made of 99% polyester and 1% elastane.
- Breathable side cover made of 100% polyester.
- Sturdier base cover made of 87% polyester and 13% polypropylene.
Polyester is durable and hydrophobic, meaning it will dry very quickly - an added protection for your mattress. ☔
The top cover is also fully removable and machine-washable at 40℃.
This makes the Emma Premium a great hypoallergenic choice [1] suitable for people prone to allergies. 🤧
Side handles for easier rotation
Even though the Emma Premium is a no-turn mattress that doesn't need to be flipped over, it still needs to be regularly rotated from head to toe.
Rotating your mattress helps to distribute body weight evenly, preventing uncomfortable indentations or sagging.
The cover features four convenient side handles that can assist with this rotation.
We encountered a slight hiccup . . .
After unboxing our Emma mattress, we discovered a small rip on the top cover, which had been concealed with tape. 😞
Naturally, this was disappointing as we expected top-notch quality from such a premium product.
However, we understand that mistakes happen.
Without any delay, we reached out to the Emma mattress customer service team. 📧
To our delight, they responded within 24 hours and promptly arranged for a new cover to be sent out, which arrived a few days later.
Despite the initial issue, we were impressed by the customer support and quick and efficient resolution.
Upgrade your cover
Emma recently released the Emma Premium Plus mattress, which includes a slightly more advanced cover than the original Emma Premium.
The Emma Premium Honeycomb cover is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, so we'd recommend hot and sweaty sleepers opt for the Emma Premium Plus upgrade. ✨
Protecting your mattress
Even though the Emma Premium mattress features a cover that's fully machine-washable at a high temperature, we'd still recommend investing in a waterproof mattress protector.
This durable mattress will last you for at least 10 years, so you want to ensure you can extend its lifespan and protect it from spills, dirt, stains, and bacteria.
The Emma mattress protector is 100% waterproof and crinkle-free.

Emma Premium mattress sizes
Emma Premium mattresses are available in most of the standard UK sizes. 🇬🇧
These include:
- Emma Premium single mattress: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
- Emma Premium small double mattress: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
- Emma Premium mattress double: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
- Emma Premium mattress king size: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
- Emma Premium super-king-size mattresses: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)
Height of the Emma Premium
The pocket springs measure 12.5 cm (4.9 inches), and the bottom foam layer averages around 5.5 cm (5.5 inches).
The top foam layers are much thinner.
The standard depth/height of the Emma Premium is 25 cm (10").
However, our mattress measured a few centimetres short of this at 20 cm (7.87").
We measured the mattress again a few weeks later, but the height remained unchanged.
A 20 cm (10") depth is fairly low for a mattress - in fact, you can typically find mattresses of this height to be amongst cheap, low-quality options.
For such a premium, costly mattress, it wasn't very reassuring to see that the Emma Premium did not reach its promised height.
Thankfully, a 2 cm (0.7") difference in height is covered by the 10-year guarantee.
If you encounter this problem, contact the Emma customer service team, who will be able to arrange a replacement. ☎️

There have been some complaints by customers about late delivery.
However, our delivery process was fast and easy.

The box measures 45 x 45 x 110 cm (17" x 17" x 43"). 📦
Unboxing the Emma Premium
Technically, one person can handle the box, but the Emma Premium mattress is quite heavy, so we recommend you unpack your new mattress with a friend or partner.
The Emma Premium comes with a little cutting tool, making it easier to remove the plastic.
Unbox your Emma Premium, then grab the cutting tool and carefully peel away the plastic layer. ✂️
Will my mattress expand automatically?
Your Emma mattress will spring to life as soon as all the plastic has been removed.
We noticed that Emma Sleep used less plastic than other brands we have unboxed in the past. ♻️
Although it may initially look slightly deflated, give it a few hours to work its magic before dressing the bed.
When your Emma Premium has fully expanded it will be ready for you to enjoy a blissful night's sleep.
Don't be alarmed by off-gassing
You may experience some off-gassing when you unpack your new mattress.
This is a chemical smell emitted by new mattresses, but this is completely normal.
The smell should be faint, but sometimes it can be a little more pungent. 🦨
We experienced a regular amount of off-gassing with the Emma Premium mattress.
We'd recommend unwrapping your new mattress in a well-ventilated room and letting it air until the smell disappears.
The smell disappeared after a few hours.
This was much more minimal than some other mattresses we've tested, such as the Panda mattress, which took a few days to disappear completely.
Can Emma remove my old mattress?
Emma UK offers an old mattress removal service at an additional cost.
You simply need to select this option upon checkout. ✔️
Delivery and collection of the old mattress will take place in your room of choice.
Couriers will remove your old mattress when they deliver your new Emma mattress. 🚚

All Emma mattresses come with a risk-free 200-night trial period.

All you need to do is head to the returns portal on the Emma UK website and complete the process.
Emma UK 10-year guarantee
The Emma Premium is a very high-quality product that's exceptionally durable. 🤞
Even after continued use, you should not experience any sagging or softening of the mattress.
To guarantee this durability, your Emma Premium comes with a 10-year warranty.
This warranty covers:
- Any dips or sags greater than 2.5 cm (0.9 inches) despite correct use.
- Cracks or hollows in the foam of the mattress within the first 6 months of use.
- Mattress not inflating to the correct size despite a 2 cm (0.7") leeway across all dimensions.
- Damaged zippers or faulty stitching.
In the event of any of these, Emma will exchange your mattress free of charge.
We had a fault with our Emma mattress cover, where we found a tear in the material covered with tape:
Luckily, this fault was covered by the 10-year guarantee.
We simply had to send a photo to Emma's customer service team, and they sent a replacement cover within a few days.
Is the Emma Premium mattress worth it?
Yes, if you have the budget available, then the Emma Premium mattress is an excellent choice. 🥳
