Take a look at these Emma Hybrid alternatives

Since the Emma Hybrid is no longer officially available, take a look at these great alternatives.

Emma Hybrid alternatives:

How comfortable is the Emma Hybrid?

We weren't sure what to expect when we first started our Emma Hybrid mattress review, but it turns out this is a very comfortable mattress.

We slept like a dream. 😴

Emma Hybrid mattress with box
The Emma Hybrid is a dream to sleep on.

We look at the composition and firmness levels of the Emma Hybrid in more detail further down, but it's importnat to know that this is a pocket sprung memory foam hybrid mattress with a medium firmness.

Even though the pocket spring layer adds more support, the upper comfort layers of memory foam give the Emma Hybrid a soft and pleasant feeling.

Memory foam is known for its high degree of comfort.

It moulds to the contours of your body, supporting you where needed, allowing your muscles to relax sufficiently, and relieving any pressure points.

This gives you the most comfy level of body support.

Is the Emma Hybrid suited to restless sleepers?

Memory foam can sometimes be a little difficult to move around on.🕺

This is because of the characteristic memory imprint, where the foam holds the shape of your body for a little longer.

The images below demonstrate this memory imprint well:

memory foam mattress with hand

memory foam imprint

The mattress pictured above is the Tempur Sensation Elite, a pure memory foam mattress, where you'll find a very high degree of body contouring.

The Emma Hybrid only has a thinner layer of viscoelastic foam to still give you that memory foam comfort but without the trouble of moving.

We found the mattress very easy to turn around on.

This makes it a great choice for more restless sleepers. 💃

Emma Hybrid firmness rating

The Emma Hybrid is described as a medium-firm mattress, but we think it definitely falls on the firmer end of the scale.

emma hybrid firmness scale

We'd place it at a 6.5 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.

This is surprising since Emma UK claims the Hybrid is softer than the Emma Original. 🤔

We found the Emma Original a little too soft, but the Hybrid was the perfect in-between.

When lying on the Emma Hybrid mattress, my first impression was that it felt firm and flexible. From the very first night, I felt comfortable on it. The layers of memory foam and pocket springs combine flexibility and firmness.

It's important to choose a mattress that isn't too firm or too soft to ensure correct levels of support.

Does the Emma Hybrid mattress offer enough support?

When we tried the mattress for our Emma Hybrid review, we were pleasantly surprised at just how supportive it felt - especially if you're of average weight.

With its unique combination of materials and the zoned base layer, the Emma Hybrid manages to offer great support while keeping your spine in healthy alignment. 📏

This is achieved in two ways:

  • The mattress offers more support for the lighter parts of your body, like your feet and head.
  • It also allows the heavier parts of your body, like your shoulders and pelvis, to sink in more deeply.

The illustration below shows how these two factors work together:

optimal spinal alignment
Contour zones allow for optimal spinal alignment.

This optimally aligned spine not only feels more comfortable, but it's also better for you. 🥰

A good mattress can help if you have any orthopaedic concerns or struggle with upper or lower back pain.

If you're looking for targeted relief of pressure points, you may want to turn to percussion therapy devices like massage guns.

How good is the edge support?

The Emma Hybrid offered pretty great edge support.

  • We could sleep right up to the end of the mattress and never felt like support dwindled.
  • We could sit on the edge of the mattress and didn't feel like the mattress sank down too much.

Support with sitting on the edge could have been slightly better, but if you're not planning on spending hours sitting on the side of your bed, you'll be fine.

edge support
There are many reasons you may need a mattress with good edge support.

Sleeping right up to the edge definitely felt supportive enough.

This means that you can comfortably make use of the entire width of the mattress, which is great news if you're sharing your bed with a partner.

Does the Emma Hybrid sleep hot?

The combination of materials in the Emma Hybrid allows for great breathability.

Memory foam mattresses generally offer a warmer sleep as memory foam retains more heat. 🥵

But, the patented Airgocell foam layer and the pocket springs counteract this, allowing for greater air circulation and preventing heat from being trapped in the mattress.

The space between the pocket springs in the mattress's core is especially important in enhancing airflow.

In addition to these factors, the Hybrid also features a 3D mesh cover, which further enhances breathability. ❄️

Emma Hybrid mattress
The Emma Hybrid is cool and comfortable.

This is great news for people who prefer a more temperature-neutral sleep.

What if you're a heavy sweater?

If you're a hot sleeper, you may still notice that you sweat heavily with the Emma Hybrid.

As long as you're comfortable, this isn't a train smash.

breathability of sprung mattress
Sprung mattresses tend to offer enhanced breathability.

After all, the mattress cover is removable and machine-washable, so it's easy to get rid of any sweat stains. 😅

But if you want something a little cooler, you'd probably do better on a pure spring mattress.

Alternatively, check out our best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers to get the perfect match.

Is the Emma Hybrid a good choice for couples?

The foams used in the Emma Hybrid are great for limiting motion transfer. 🦘

Motion transfer refers to how well movement and vibrations travel through the mattress.

If a mattress has low motion transfer, movement is absorbed sufficiently and won't travel through the mattress.

This means you won't be disturbed by your partner's movements at night.

motion transfer
Couples generally need a mattress with low motion transfer.

Since the Emma Hybrid has low motion transfer, it's a good mattress for couples. 👩‍❤️‍👨

If you're sharing your bed with a partner, though, we would highly recommend choosing a larger mattress size, like the Emma Hybrid king-size mattress (or even super king, if space allows).

Larger mattress sizes ensure that both partners have enough space to sleep comfortably.

And since this is a bed-in-a-box mattress, you won't even have to worry about carting a larger mattress into your home. 🎁

The Emma Hybrid is delivered rolled-up in a cardboard box - but we'll tell you more about the delivery process further down.

Emma Hybrid mattress composition

The Emma Hybrid is a high-quality hybrid mattress. 👽

As the name suggests, this type of mattress combines different materials to create one superior product.

The hybrid Emma spring mattress combines the best features of memory foam mattresses and pocket sprung mattresses to create a breathable, supportive, and comfortable sleeping surface. ☁️

The mattress features five different layers, including the UltraDry Original top cover.

The layers are:

  • Ultra-breathable viscoelastic memory foam
  • Steel micro-coils
  • Patented Airgocell memory foam
  • Supportive HRX cold foam

It also features a fully removable and washable top cover. 🧼

Emma Hybrid mattress layers

Let's look at the layers of the Emma Hybrid in a tad more detail.

1. A top layer of memory foam

This top comfort layer is made of open-pored, breathable memory foam. 💨

It provides a comfortable sleeping surface but also limits motion transfer, so you'll feel more comfortable in bed with a partner.

2. Supportive steel micro pocket springs

The second layer of the mattress features an average of 2000 individually wrapped pocket springs, placed deep between two layers of foam.

Emma Hybrid mattress layers
There are five total layers to the Emma Hybrid mattress.

The pocket springs provide support by responding to your body and allowing for enhanced pressure relief.

3. Airgocell viscoelastic memory foam

The third part of the mattress is a pressure-relieving memory foam layer.

This gives the mattress orthopaedic qualities, adapting perfectly to your shape for that body-hugging comfort. 🤗

4. A base layer of supportive HRX foam

This cold foam base layer of Emma's High Resiliency Extra foam adds overall stability and support to the mattress.

It also features unique contour zones, enhancing the mattress's ability to keep your body perfectly aligned for that orthopaedic feel.

You can also upgrade to the Emma Hybrid Plus mattress, which comes with a premium honeycomb cover for enhanced breathability.

Emma Hybrid mattress cover

The Emma Hybrid mattress is encased in a stylish grey-and-white cover made predominantly of polyester.

The top part of the mattress cover is completely removable and machine-washable at 60℃.

This ensures your mattress stays clean and fresh no matter what. 🛀

It also makes the mattress a hypoallergenic choice [1] suitable for people prone to allergies.

The bottom cover contains a non-slip base, which allows your mattress to sit firmly on your bed frame.

This is particularly convenient if you have an ottoman bed base to ensure that your mattress doesn't slip off every time you open your bed frame.

The Emma Hybrid Plus mattress comes with an upgraded honeycomb cover to enhnace mattress breathability and increase comfort.

Temperature control

The mattress cover also plays a large role in ensuring good temperature regulation.

Not only is the cover fitted with temperature-regulating fibres, but it also features 3D mesh to help wick away moisture.

This keeps the cover and the mattress as a whole more breathable. 💨

Enhanced air circulation and breathability ensure that your mattress will remain more temperature-neutral, resulting in an overall more comfortable sleep.

Side handles for easy transportation

Conveniently, the Emma Hybrid mattress cover also has side handles.

These make transporting the mattress much easier.

You don't need to flip your mattress, but turning it regularly is recommended.

The Emma Hybrid is also a relatively low-weight mattress, coming in at only 35 kg (77 lbs) for the largest super king size.

This is pretty low for such a large size - some mattresses, like the Hästens beds, weigh up to 455 kg (1003.1 lbs). Granted, that includes the base but is still very extreme.

Need extra protection?

Even though the Emma Hybrid cover is washable, we'd always recommend adding a mattress protector.

Mattress protectors further safeguard your mattress from any spills, damage, and stains.

The Emma mattress protector is a great option. 👌

Emma Hybrid mattress sizes

Emma Hybrid mattresses are available in most standard UK mattress sizes. 🇬🇧

These include:

  • Emma Hybrid single mattresses: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
  • Emma Hybrid small double mattresses: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
  • Emma Hybrid double mattresses: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • Emma Hybrid king-size mattresses: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
  • Emma Hybrid super-king-size mattresses: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)

The right size for you depends on your personal requirements, budget, and the size of your bedroom.

standard uk mattress sizes

That said, we'd recommend that couples opt for a double mattress as an absolute minimum, though the Emma Hybrid mattress king size will sleep more comfortably. 👑

Emma Hybrid mattress depth

All Emma Hybrid mattresses have a height of 25 cm (9.8 inches).

This is on par with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, meaning all your standard bedding should fit quite comfortably.

Emma Hybrid mattress depth
The Emma Hybrid has a height of 25 cm, but there may be small differences between individual mattresses.

It's also a great height for box spring beds and divan bases, like the much-loved Emma divan bed. 🛌

Deeper mattresses look better on a divan base and make it easier to get in and out of bed.

This is especially important if you have orthopaedic concerns or are elderly.

Emma mattress weight limit

The Emma Hybrid mattress has been designed to support a maximum weight of 130 kg (286 lbs) per person.

couple in bed
Most people can sleep comfortably on the Emma Hybrid.

People heavier than this will not get enough support and are likely to sink into the mattress too deeply.

This can lead to lower back pain and orthopaedic problems in the long term.

We'd recommend that larger builds opt for pocket spring mattresses.

How do you unpack the Emma Hybrid?

Bed-in-a-box mattresses seem confusing to those who've never tried them.

But, unpacking a bed-in-a-box mattress is actually really simple.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  • Place the mattress box on your bed frame.
  • Cut open the box and roll the mattress onto your bed frame.
  • Remove the plastic wrapping and unroll the mattress.
  • Let it expand.

Your mattress should start expanding immediately after unpacking, but it may take 4 - 6 hours to reach full expansion. ⏰

The Emma Hybrid expands as soon as the vacuum seal is removed.

Off-gassing is completely normal

You may notice a slight odour when you first unpack your mattress.

This is entirely normal and a side effect of the manufacturing process.

The smell is not toxic, but can be a little unpleasant.

We recommend you unpack your Emma Hybrid in a well-ventilated room and allow the smell to disappear fully before use. 🏠

off-gassing
Off-gassing is completely normal for bed-in-a-box products.

This shouldn't take more than a few days at most.

What do you do with your old mattress?

Of course, you can dispose of your old mattress yourself.

We give you tips on how to do this in our article on mattress disposal.

But, conveniently, Emma also offers an old mattress removal service.

At a small additional cost, they will pick up your old mattress when they deliver your new one, so you don't have to deal with the hassle of it at all.

Emma Hybrid trial period

Emma products used to come with a standard 100-night trial period.

But, this has now been extended to a 200-day risk-free trial period. 🥳

Your trial period begins with mattress delivery.

You will then have the chance to try out the mattress for 200 days in the comfort of your own home. 🏡

trial period

It's comfortable and offers a good night's sleep with adequate support, pressure relief, and optimal spinal alignment.

We can recommend the Emma Hybrid mattress to:

  • People of light or average weights.
  • People who enjoy a medium-firm sleeping surface.
  • Side sleepers.
  • Couples.
  • Restless sleepers.

If you're not sure, we recommend using the trial period.

After all, it's only by sleeping on a mattress for a few weeks that you'll know if it's really right for you.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why choose a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattresses combine the features of a foam mattress with the features of a spring mattress.

    The materials work together optimally.

The foam layers allow the mattress to compress, aiding comfort, while the springs offer stability, support, and pressure relief.

Both materials used in the Emma Hybrid are of high quality, ensuring the durability and long lifespan of the mattress.

  • Can the Emma Hybrid support heavier-weight people?

We thought the Emma Hybrid offered the perfect level of support in all sleeping positions and for a wide variety of sleepers of different genders, sizes, and weights.

But, if you're larger than average, the mattress may not be able to give you the support you need.

Even though this is a medium-firm option, heavier-weight people often require much more support.

We'd recommend that heavier-weight people opt for pure innerspring mattresses, which are often much firmer and can be much more supportive than foam or hybrid models.

  • Can Emma customise my Emma Hybrid mattress?

The Emma mattress may only be available at one level of firmness but the company is there to help you achieve maximum comfort.

Emma UK offers you one free layer to help soften or firm up the mattress if you find that it isn't quite working for you.

All you need to do is contact Emma's senior support team at support@emma-mattress.co.uk.

  • Does the Emma Hybrid come with a 10-year guarantee?

Your Emma Hybrid mattress also comes with a 10-year guarantee.

This guarantee protects you in case of manufacturing faults or premature deterioration of foams or springs.

    This warranty covers:

    • Any dips or sags greater than 2.5 cm (0.9 inches) despite correct use.
    • Cracks or hollows in the mattress's foam within the first 6 months of use.
    • Mattress not inflating to the correct size despite a 2 cm (0.7 inches) leeway across all dimensions.
    • Damaged zippers or faulty stitching.

In the event of any of these, Emma will exchange your mattress.

  • Are Emma products safety-certified?

Emma UK complies with strict testing and safety requirements during the manufacturing process.

All Emma mattresses comply with the BS 7177 regulation [3], making them fully fire-retardant. 🔥

Emma mattresses are also 100% vegan.

  • Where are Emma mattresses made?

All Emma mattresses sold in Britain are made in the UK.

  • Has the Emma Hybrid won any awards?

Emma is an award-winning mattress brand. 🏆

Their flagship product, the Emma Original, has received dozens of accolades from UK establishments, including, Which? Consumers' Association, Ideal Home, Real Homes, T3, The Independent, and Good Housekeeping

The brand has also received several awards and recognitions in other European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany.

Also, Emma Mattress UK has a 3.9 rating with over 35 000 customer reviews on Trustpilot.

    Emma Hybrid Which? test results

The Emma Hybrid itself is an award-winning mattress in its own right and has been granted the Best Buy approval by the Which? Consumers' Association [4]

It scored 76% in the Which? test results.

They've rated it as an incredibly durable mattress that's breathable, stable, easy to move around on, and supportive for most people.

But, they've found it to lack support for back sleepers of larger body sizes.

  • Does the Emma Hybrid come with an NHS discount?

Emma UK offers an essential worker's discount for the following industries:

    • NHS health service discounts
    • Education discounts
    • Carer discounts
    • Emergency service discounts for all emergency service personnel

The key worker discount gives you an additional 6% off any purchase from the Emma UK website.

Unfortunately, it cannot be used with other offers, sales, or promotions.

  • Can I buy the Emma Hybrid on Amazon UK or through other stockists?

Yes, the Emma Hybrid mattress is available on Amazon in the UK and via other approved sellers, including DFS, Carpetright, and John Lewis

The 10-year guarantee is valid if you purchase from an approved seller, though delivery conditions are subject to change.

You will only receive a 14-day trial and a 6-month guarantee if you purchase an Emma Hybrid refurbished mattress through agents such as Wowcher, GoGroopie, or eBay.

  • What's the difference between the Emma Original and Emma Hybrid?

The Emma Original is the Emma flagship product.

This is a soft memory foam mattress that's perfect for side sleepers and lighter-weight people.

The Emma Hybrid, in contrast, is a hybrid mattress that combines memory foam with mini pocket springs.

The Hybrid is also a tad firmer than the Emma Original.

  • What's the difference between the Emma Hybrid mattress and the Emma Premium mattress?

These are two very different mattresses.

    • The Emma Hybrid mattress is a hybrid mattress combining two layers of memory foam with mini pocket springs and a cold foam base.
    • The Emma Premium mattress may also be a hybrid mattress (and is often called the Emma Premium Hybrid), but this is a deeper mattress combining three layers of memory foam with full-size pocket springs and a cold foam base.

The Emma Premium is also a more expensive mattress, and better suited to heavier-weight sleepers.
